Massive Lens Rental Indecision

Yes
...or that should be massive indecision rather than massive lens....

I've got a family event coming up in a couple of weeks and as I won't be drinking  I thought it'd be an excuse to hire a lens that I wouldn't normally have access to and amuse myself taking some pictures.

I was considering either the Nikon 24-70 2.8 or the 70-200 2.8 VRII and I've got a D60. The event happens to be a wedding but I am NOT there in any other capacity than a guest i.e. the photo bit is purely for my benefit.

Now I'm leaning towards the 70-200 but I'm wondering if it will be too tight on a crop sensor. I like the idea of being able to take some fairly candid stealth mode pictures but will I just end up with close-ups of noses? I hear great things of the 24-70 but wonder if that range is wasted on a crop?

Looks like a nice church and country hall setup (all in the same grounds) so if it's not raining/snowing/foggy could be some good outside opportunities (Prestwold Hall, Loughborough for those that know it).

Shall I go with the 70-200?

I would say 70-200, as you'd be able to get some decent candid shots with it. I reckon you'd have to be fairly close to the subject if you wanted to use the 24-70....

Renting one, will in time MAKE you want to buy one though! :D

i would take a 24-70 2.8, quite a nice range on a crop sensor too. be warned though, it will make you want to buy one after you have to send it back!

I'd vote for the 24-70mm too.
Would have thought the 70-200mm might have been a bit intrusive for you to be using as a guest plus wedding ceremonies and receptions are usually poorly lit affairs so you'd benefit from the 24-70's ability to make sharp handheld images at lower shutter speeds.

And yes, you WILL want to buy one.

"And yes, you WILL want to buy one".

£1200 and £1600 for the lenses respectively....hmmm...it wouldn't really be fair on the newlyweds to make them witness my wife beating me over the head with the business end of a 70-200 :bonk: ....and yes, I know they're built to take it.

But it looks like the 24-70 is getting the nod?

You do realise that both of those lenses would be totally unbalanced on a D60....

two hands and a sling strap sorts that out lol.

I know what you mean though. if you are not used to it, you will feel it by the end of the day.

personally the 24-70 will be more useful in my opinion.

Yes, I know both of them will dwarf the camera but as long as they work on it, it's an opportunity to try some lenses that I wouldn't otherwise have access to.

what lenses do you already have - not really sure a couple of heavy lenses you're not familiar with will get you any better shots.

18-55 kit lens, 50mm 1.8 and a 70-300 Sigma - the last two are manual focus only. I haven't got any real expectations other than it would be nice to try a decent piece of kit - same as if I hired a Lamborghini....I wouldn't expect to become a better driver but I'd enjoy the experience :)

just an idea - how about hiring a camera that would a/f with those lenses ??

Why not rent Nikon's new fabulous 85mm? Not as long and cumbersome as the 70-200, but just that little bit longer than the 24-70 (if you wanted to do candids, you'd probably be constantly at the 70 end anyway) and smaller and lighter than both, not to mention faster.

If there is a kind of lens you want to experiment and play with - surely that's it.

Not a bad idea but the camera rental seems quite expensive (compared to the lenses) and I'd probably need a D3 to squeeze anything out of my Sigma 70-300 when used indoors!

For £50 I'll give the 24-70 a bash - if it gets too heavy I can use the kids as monopods (they're just at the right height now).

A good plan.

Can't seem to find the new AFS version for rental.

Having looked at the venue online it looks like there might be scope for some wider shots outside so it's another tick for the 24-70 :)

agreed look at the Sigma OS one also as that is cheaper and not far off in IQ .... but you WILL want one after renting so makes it more realistic after too lol
