Master Chef......Master Photographer?

Yes
Just being forced to watch the final of Master Chef on telly by the other half and I had this thought.......

wouldn't it be great if they did a programme on telly based on the same format as Master Chef, but for photography?

Imagine the concept - pick out a bunch of amateur/enthusiast photographers, put them through a series of photography challenges on a weekly basis, get some famous photographers as judges/panellists and ultimately pick one MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER! The prize? How about the winner's image published on the front cover of a major magazine - could be wildlife, photography, fashion..........obviously a load of Nikon pro gear thrown in for good measure would be great too (obviously the competition would only be open to Nikon users :lol: :nikon:

What do you think? Would you apply to be a contestant? Would you even watch it on telly?

Aaahhhhh.....I can only dream! :D
I'm sure someone is going to tell me that something like this has been done already?!

I think its a great idea, the only downside, is the tv company would be limiting its market, not everyone uses a camera let alone an SLR, however everyone eats food
However, yeah, i'd apply, and id watch!!

I'd watch it for sure.

the format would most probably be like extreme fishing, rather than master chef but called extreme photography :)

It'll be good though, especially in HD :D

Something like this was done a couple of years ago if I recall (or did I dream it?)

Edit: Nope I didn't - it was called Picture This and was on Channel 4 (no wonder no one saw it!)

I would definately watch it. Could be an interesting format especially if all sorts of varying genres were used. All that Nikon gear would be a waste though. I already have paperweights...(not Canon branded for any of you witty Nikonians). ;):D

Something like this was done for a wildlife program but instead it was done for a Camera operator. They did various tasks that the teams had to film and then edit and then at the end they did it solo to see who would get the job.

So a sort of apprentice mix in there as well.

Hmmm....interesting to hear your views. I do remember C4 Picture This but can't remember the exact format.
I agree that more people are interested in food than photography, but I really think that with digital becoming so affordable over the past few years, there are more people than we realise that are interested in photography. I am surprised when I speak to various colleagues at work who own DSLR's and are interested in some sort of photography.

I think the issue is that in certain circles, photography may still be seen as being a bit of a geek, so people don't necessarily talk about it openly with others, but once you tell someone that you are in to photography and they realise that you've got as shared interest, the conversation can last a long time!

Congratulations to Dhruv by the way for winning Master Chef - I thought all 3 were equally brilliant and the judges muct have had a really tough job of selecting the winner.

What a great idea!

Singers go on X-Factor cos they love singing and performing (good or not!)
Chefs go on Masterchef for their love of cooking,

So why not 'Master Tog' (I think I should copyright that!) for people that love photography??
I would definitely apply

Brilliant idea!

anyway it would be a great idea and i wouldnt care how niche the market is, if we have to listen to crappy wannabe singers on x factor then they should show some photography programmes so we can have a good watch.

Haha, I was actually watching the final myself and thought the same thing! :D

Don't like cooking and only eat to live really but I quite enjoyed the few MasterChiefs I saw. So a show like that on photography would be awesome!

Cheers!:)

Remember it's my name idea if there are any tv producers reading!!!:nono:

LOL!

You might have trouble with that now after having put your idea out into the public domain. :p Better luck next time. :bonk:

Picture This on C4 is likely to have turned the general public right OFF photography, since it was completely up itself, very niche, and had absolutely no broad appeal.
If any tv company was going to judge the popularity of such a show based on that, I can imagine it would never happen again.

This was done two years ago on Channel Four, and - unsurprisingly - an interesting idea was hijacked by pretentious toss. The woman who won went on to hold an exhibition of snapshot photographs of the the feet of women who had overcome alcoholism.

This idea is about 40 years too late!

In the 60's if you walked up to anyone in the street and asked them to name a famous chef you'd not get many answers. However, if you asked them for a photographer they'd name Bailey, Litchfield, Donovan, Snowdon, Duffy....

Now ask the same questions and you'll get dozens of chefs names - and for photographers.... Bailey, Litchfield, and Rankin... and that about it!

For some reason someone cooking a 2cmx2cm portion of guava and rancid yaks butter sauce covered duck parcel on a bed of caramelised brussell sprout is more interesting and relevant to the public than photography - and I sort of see that.

The X factor thing, well, everyone (seems to) want fame and always has. Old Huey Green used to be incredibly popular.

Photography is pretty geeky really, you might have more success with "Web Master" - the show where you have to create web sites or "Vomit Factor", a show hosted by Johnny Vegas to find the UK's top binge drinker.

I remember it well, and agree with the above, and it was bloody boring as hell, i have to admit to liking master chef ok i'll :coat:, but that's probably because i like cooking, i think a program dedicated to photography using this format is very doable but it would have to have some dynamics, not like the boring channel 4 crap that was put out.
