as heading. how is the best way to take an image of a street at night time?

is it best to use only streetlights and moonlight?

If your asking if you should use flash, then no you should'nt as it would underexpose the scene.( you'd have an area lit up as far as the reach of the flash, but everything beyond that would be in darkness)

But you could use flash in manual, to create various effects

Oh and use a tripod

I would suggest put the camera in manual mode, setting it up on a tripod and playing around with different shutter/aperture combinations see what works and what you like.

If you want Arthur's Seat and the city lights you'll get best results by taking two shots and combining them. The first shot expose for the lights, the second expose for moonlight. The reason you'll need to do this is because of the difference in brightness between the two, if you expose for the moon light the city section will be over exposed and vice versa.

I would imagine the city would produce alot of light itself, it would be hard if not impossible to use just moonlight for a photo of this subject. My best advice would be to get out there and experiment, its the most fun way of learning and your guaranteed to get some interesting shots.

Try and pic a night when the streets are wet. You'll get nice reflections.

If you are up at Arthur's Seat and taking a shot with the city laid out below showing all it's lights etc then that would also include a fair bit of sky? If it were me then I'd aim for a bit of dying light in the sky (after sunset but before the light fully goes). It looks attractive (especially with a part cloudy, part clear sky), will prevent a large area of black in the scene and there just might be enough light to illuminate the Arthur's Seat a tad.

Zoom in and shoot a panoramic. This gets rid of unwanted sky and foreground.

basic thing is that how much light you have in your frame. Sometime you need more light so you can use your flash.

I took this shot.. here i didn't use any flash, used only available lights on road.

tried to play with RGB colors... Red in bottom of bridge, Green in Bridge, Blue in Tungsten street light.
