Memory card problem - help!

Hi All,

Went to concert last night and have a small problem!

I have a Fuji S100FS and it had a 8GB Kingston SDHC card which I took the photos on.

When I copied the photos to the PC just now, I noticed that the card is only reporting as bing 3.86GB in size, and half my photos are missing!

Just tried the same card in another camera and the same thing.

I also have another identical card by the same manufacturer (Kingston) and it also reports the card as being undersized - ie 3.46GB when it should be 8GB.

The cards are Kingston SDHC SD6/8GB.

Any ideas on what I can do, or are they gone / overwritten?

I never got any card full messages...

Cheers

Lee

Have you tried any recovery software? Certainly worth a try imo.

I've not encountered the under-reported card size before, are you sure your camera is fully compatible with cards of this size?

Also, where did you buy the cards from? Are you sure they are genuine and not fakes?

Best of luck getting it sorted.

Hi - not as yet - I wanted to get a second opnion before playing with the card, but saything that I have copied what was on there so far.

The camera is a Fuji S100FS - I've checked compatability - it says it can handle 8GB cards by only Sandisk have been tested...

Bought them from eBuyer - will check - thanks!

I have a license for some professional retrieval software. This was bought to recover hard drives etc. It has an option to recover memory cards and it works extremely well. If you mess with it you might loose everything. If you want it recovering and can't do it without risk just PM me.

try photorec (google it), it's free and open source, not the most user friendly program, but I've had 100% success rate with it in recovering corrupted SD cards. The settings look complicated, but basically just take the default settings and it should be ok.

Failing that, every man and his dog on the forums has a license key for recovery pro, because they come free with sandisk cf cards...may be worth a try.

After this, make sure you retire the card to being a 'moving small and non backed up photos round the house', rather than being in your camera - once a card goes bad once, I no longer trust it!

Just a thought is your camera compatable with the larger cards, maybe it's only "seeing" 4gb.

I seem to remember that something about 8Gb cards and the Canon 5D. It couldn't format 8Gb, but once formatted in another camera they were fine. I wonder if this is a similar problem.

My 8Gb cards work OK in my 5D but they were formatted in a 1Ds first. never did try them without formatting

OK - so to update and close this, I purchased a 5in1 memory card reader from Jessops so I could get to the entire card via drive letter and I scouted the internet for some recovery software. Came across CardRecovery and downloaded it.

Success! It recongnised the near full card capacity and when scanned it found all the images. As it was a trial version, it then asked me to purchase a copy, which I did and now I have all my photos back.

Hopefully I'll never have to use it again, but it's now part of my software library!

Thanks for all the advice!
