Hi guys,

Does anyone on here have any advice on how to store images from memory cards to external hard drives? My laptop isnt that fantastic so wouldnt rely on it for a sole source of storage.

Any advice / recommendations on external hard drives etc would be great.

Thanks!

My only advice would be to definitely get & use one. For images that you really can't afford to lose, back up to CD or DVD and store them somewhere safe.

Store as RAW / TIFF rather than JPEG.

You can get large (500Gb) USB external hard drives for £50-60. Have a look on www.ebuyer.co.uk

I have an external hard drive that i save all my images to. I then try and edit them within a month or so and then burn both edited and original to CD. Therefore i have the originals backed up to cd, which then get put in a CD file in the cupboard.

Its always a difficult one. How many precautions do you take? Personally Hard disk and a CD is enough for me. Some others may think otherwise.

2 externals, soon to be 3. One I back up after each shoot, the other every week or two, and the third will be backed up monthly. Plus DVDs stored at my sister's house. I may be being overly paranoid, but I know a photographer who lost a silly amount of RAW files when all his drives went tits up, I think drives and disc are essential. Just how many of each is a personal choice.

I used to burn to DVD, but nowadays 4 gigs isn't enough, so I use a backup drive that I "synctoy" across every other week.

I just backup my RAWs every week to a couple of external drives. One is always plugged into my PC and the other is kept safe in a drawer.
