Upgraded the software on my iPad2 and now have a feature 'messages' what is it and what does it do.

Yeah I had the same. It's compatible with iPod touch, iPhone and iPad with os5

It'll be interesting to see how it fairs agains bbm. Would would have been really good is RIM and apple working together to make them compatible!
( oh hang on, they did that but called it email!)

Hmmm I shall have a look at it, bb gives you a bb number/pin guessing this does as well.

Actually, the iMessage let's you do it via email address as long as the person you want to contact is registered as a user

its awesome fair play. You can send photos too which is awlays a bonus!

iMessages from iPads to iPhones and iPod's, is this free......????

Yes it is completely free.

Not sure about video but yes photos are ok

Yes it is completely free.

It uses your data allowance rather than text allowances with your contract/payment plan.

If you are connected via WiFi then it sends it over your network, if on 3G it'll be part of your data usage.

Easy to tell the difference too as iMessages are blue but standard texts are the old green colour speech boxes

I just dont want my ipad to start sending txts as its a data pla only and it would cost me a fortune :-(

As said above, iMessages are not text mesages. It's the Apple equivalent of BBM. I use iMessage from my iPod Touch, and use of an iPod Touch doesn't cost a cent!

What information do you need to message another user, this is the bit that is confusing me. Email, phone number .. other?

woah, lots of confusion here, lol

yes it sends text, photos AND video
yes you can use email
BUT also you can use phone - even on an ipad
from what I understand it's actually irrelevant what you use - it's just a contact - it doesn't care whether it is email or number. Except when you try and send it to a number and there is no 3g or wifi, then of course it will send it as a text message which will cost you normal fee - but it tries as an iMessage first - which is nice.

the great thing is that you just use the one app - ok there are other IM apps etc - but all your conversations now can be in the same place whether they were through text message or through IM

iMessages is very good.

I've got a wifi only iPad 2 and I use it to send messages to iPad and iPhones.

You can also send pictures and video, all free (if you're on wifi).

There is a free app called Emoji that gives you all the smiley faces and silly icons too.

It's cool, maybe one of the best things about iOS5 on the iPad.
