It seems to be a lens for people who want to go around saying "Hey look, I can afford this lens!" rather than those who actually want a technically better lens.
Its technicaly better in everyway than the 50 1.4 but £ 1000 it may not be. Neither are very sharp at 1.4 but the 58 renders beautifully from the images ive seen and has some character. The 58 is alsp alot better at handling light points and chroma. Its not a lens I can see many buyingvthough due to the price. When for many the 50 would be enough.. to be honest I went for the 1.8g as thats even cheaper and as good if not better than the 1.4g bar the apature.
