Hi All

I'm wanting to take a shot of one of the local roundabouts with a beautiful floral display on it . I'd like to capture the motion of cars going round but with the motion blurred & my mind is a total blank on how to do it :bang:

I can freeze motion reasonably well but for this shot the focal point needs to be the roundabout . I'm thinking I need a longish shutter speed to get the blur but will this result in over-exposure on the main subject ?

Probably using the kit 18-55 lens on a tripod , got a release cable now just waiting for another day with sunshine.

Can someone straighten my head out on this please :cuckoo:

many thanks

Im a week old DSLR user so i may not be 100% correct.

Firstly i would shoot with the sun behind the camera, use a long shutter speed, best is to try at a couple of second and increase/decrease it as you wish once you take the first shot.

Can i ask are you taking the shot from higher ground or ground level with the roundabout? If you increase the aperature(lower f number) and try keep the iso at 100 it shouldnt result in over-exposure. If it does shoot when there is a bright but cloudy day.

As i said im new to this, thats just my opinion, may not be the best setup i warn you in advance!

You'll need to shoot in low light or use an Nd filter to reduce the light to get a long exposure.

Hiya Mike...been missing your Planted shots :) Filters are all new to me ,just had a quick look at Warehouse express for some ideas but there are soooo many to choose from...can you advise which type to go for ? HAd a feeling this was gonna result in spending some more money !

Hiya Blade...biker by any chance ? Older blades are just grrreat

If the weathes won't like this weekend am gonna just give it a go & see what happens if I've not bought a filter by then . Ground is level from the side with least signposts on it , was considering a step ladder but would probably fall/ get knocked off it

Nah not a biker. Mind you i've always wanted a motorbike :D blade is just a username i use for gaming when i was younger and its stuck to me now with everywhere i sign up :p

If its a dull and cloudy day without the sun out, give it a go, you'd be surprised with the results, you may even get better results than when the sun would be out.

Sunny 16 rule says that even at f/16 and 100 ISO you'll be shooting at 1/100 on a bright, sunny day.

An ND2 will cut that to 1/50
An ND4 will cut it to 1/25
An ND8 will cut it to 1/13

Just what you need will depend on how fast the cars are travelling, just how bright it is and exactly how much blur you want. At 20mph a car will cover 9m/s, so in 1/13" it will cover about 70cm.

If you pick an overcast day you might well find the clouds provide the equivalent of an ND8 all by themselves (could be more, could be less).

Pick a calm day or your flowers will be wobbling about and won't look sharp.

Thanks for the replies , advice taken & just ordered some ND filters -2 ,4, & 8
so I'll see what happens . Hoping to get the shot on a sunny day as the flowers always look better (to me anyway ) .
Cars shouldn't be going too fast as quite a tight roundabout but guess till I try I won't no

Thanks for all the advice , knew I was missing something & know I now ....filters :)
