Mobile Broadband - What's The Best Deal ?

Hi folks.

Looking at 'dongles' and mobile broadband.

As I will only be using it approx once per month (for 3 - 4 days at a time) I want something relatively cheap. Happy to look at some PAYG type thing as well as very cheap contracts.

Does anyone have any ideas on good deals ?

PS - please note, I'd need to be using dongle / modem type on computer rather than via phone.

As far as I know T Mobile are the only PAYG option where you can pay for short terms of coverage. They certainly were when |I was looking around.

So from T Mobile you can get:
£2 a day, £7 a week or £15 a month

Whereas most providers give you something like:
£15 TopUp gives you 3GB of data, which lasts for up to 30 days

Which basically means that even if you only use a small amount of your data allowance, it runs out after a month. So even the 'PAYG' dongles are effectively monthly opt out contracts.

You could also consider:
Using your mobile tethered - check your T&C's in your contract.

Buying a MIFI type device, so that you carry around your own wireless network.
 
I dislike how it expires. If you've topped up then it should not expire until you've used up your allowance. I've been looking also for a proper PAYG.
 
I'm lucky in that I have a Virgin contract. I pay £8 a month for 1gb. Now that doesn't sound a lot but I only surf, read emails and do a little work so for me thats perfect.

It might be worth seeing if you can get a deal with your service provider
 
I to have the virgin mobile broadband (think the donlge runs off the T-mobile network - correct me if I am wrong)
I pay £15 a month for 1gb data allowance which is more than enough for emails and general surfing.
Reason I pay £15 a month though is I opted to take the Virgin netbook aswell.
 
Isn't slow though ?! I was thinking to get one as well but one of my friends has it already and semms soooo sloow!
I'm not sure which provider is he with
 
stay away from the Three network, I've had nothing but problems with them and I am stuck in an 18 month contract with them now
 
I've always found mobile broadband speed pretty appalling, Ok for emails and the like, but not really a solution for 'real' work.

Depends what you want to use it for. You might be better using WIFI and finding a free hotspot, you might have to buy a lot of coffee though !
 
I'm looking into this as well - seems you can pick up a 1Gb / 30 day SIM from Ebay easy enough for about £4 - also need to get a dongle with it.

I've ordered a "3" 30 day / 1Gb pack to try on my Netbook, so will report back once it's sorted. Seems its harder to source the dongle than the SIMs..
 
Got myself sorted now.

Opted for an O2 deal after a bit of haggling - pay 6.38 per month (plus VAT), get 3gig allowance per month, free dongle and free access to BT OpenZone hotspots (don't need so much coffee!!)

Was meant to be a 24month contract but managed to get it to 12month. That will suit me fine.

PS -forgot to mention on above deal I also got 3 months free !! that was meant to be if you took an 18month contract with O2, but I think the lass I dealt with was bored and I had a cute 2 year old with me to help broker the deal!!!

I heard one that T-mobile do one where you top up £20 and then buy a web add on for £20 that last's 6 months? Gave unlimited data for 6 months too, it was talked about in a past thread.. :thinking:
 
I have a vodaphone PAYG dongle, doesn't run out after a month so is ideal for me. Used it on my home computer this week as we lost cable for the night. Sent and received a few emails browsed the web and made a skype call (no phones either), on line for well over an hour for less than 30 pence.
 
I've used 3 for a couple of years, and usually get their £5 mobile internet addon which gives 1GB for 30 days.

This mobile internet addon is supposed to be for use with a handset, but there is nothing to stop you tethering the handset to your laptop, or taking the sim out and using it in a dongle !

If you only need mobile BB once a month then 3 and Tmobile do daily internet addons.
