Yes
is there a specific forum for them..if there is, sorry, i missed it, anyway... a friend of mine has been asked to go to london (from waay ooop north) to a company called modelling goals (whos website is down at the moment)
my question is, has anyone heard of them/dealt with them?
my concern for my friend is that she travels all that way, to get some pics taken and gets charged loads and the "promise" of work etc
they want her to go down on the strength of a couple of camera phone pics that she sent them.
finally, is there a way of checking an agency is legit and not just after your cash and pics they can sell on?
thanks in advance guys n gals :)

there's lots of good advice in the forums on model mayhem and purestorm :)

generally, any model agency that wants you to pay for a 'test shoot' with THEIR photographer is dodge.

There's lots of mixed reviews if you do a Google search, enough bad ones to make me advise anyone against it to be honest.

Sounds like a scam - you don't need to pay for portfolio shots and the
'agency' can't guarantee work...only if potential clients want you will you get jobs...

As above - Model Mayhem and Purestorm is full of sage advice for budding models...

update, my friend had a call, they will pay for the studio, hair and make up, she was told they have people interested, photographers i assume. they want her to pay £50 for the studio booking. if she gets a few good pics for her to keep that sounds ok to me, but then i know jack schitt :p

further update, sorry about this :p
they also want her to pay for copyright, payable in installments, they have 3 potential jobs for her, but she needs this shoot first to proceed??

Hi they sound like portfolio builders you pay for the shoot with the promise of work then nothing its a big con and people, well young girls fall for this every time.
Tell her to stay well clear

So they'll pay for the studio but want a £50 booking fee? Hmmm :suspect:

Do you mean they want her to buy the copyright for the photos at this shoot? If so, I'd want to know how much for, and why. She could just be granted a license to use them by the photographer, there's no requirement for her to buy the copyright to use them for a portfolio.... And the fact that it's in 3 installments makes it sound like it might be a fair bit!

i just did, she told me they want £300 for 8 pics, suggested she try purestorm and model mayhem :) cheers people.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. :cuckoo:

I'm sure she'll have better luck there, and I'd bet it won't cost her £300 either!

Ouch!!

No Way! Run like fcuk from this one - it's like those 'makeover' charlatans - get a free makeover but then pay £500 for 8x A4 glossies that are terrible...I almost shot my ex-wife stone-dead when she went ahead with one after I'd specifically told her not to...

This was after she gave me grief for buying new brake-pads for the car...lol

I met a girl off Purestorm for a chat about a shoot we are yet to do but I know she gets alot of paid work, in fact I think she has just gone pro as a photographic model for photographers. No illusions of Vogue front covers just honest work.

She started with some TFCP/DVD work and got some great feedback and great images. This also builds her PR as the images and photographers do that for her.

If she is serious and keen then she should give one of the model sites a go - as always exercise caution.

True scam! And then she'd get there and be hard sold the rest of the images.

No reputable agency will work in this way - mind you, it's a fallacy that you don't have to pay for portfolio images as they sell the images to the models at around £15 each and expect them to buy around 4 or 5 from a shoot, and they have to pay for the makeup artist too.

The best route is definitely Model Mayhem to build up a portfolio, then she needs to take her book in to an agency on a go see and ask the agency if they'd be interested in her. If she's way up north as you say, then in Manchester, if she's any good, she could try Industry People, Boss Model Management and Nemesis as a start. There are others in manchester too, but that would give her a start.

By the way, if she's going to spend £300 tell her I do top notch portfolio shoots for that including shoot fee and makeup artist, and I'm based in the north ;)

:)

she's about 40 miles from preston :)
she may even join up here, as i suggested she may find someone local who an do her some pics at a mutually agreeable price, if i was closer id have a go for free, it's all experience for me though, and no guarantee that the pics will be any good :)

Also willing to help out, funnily enough I am also about 40 miles from Preston !

I would tell her to forget it. Agencys can't charge and promise of work is lies since clients choose not the agency.

A girl at work got done like this, ended up forking out over £1000 for photos and album :O

Was not happy when I gave her the purestorm web address and mentioned that in the future I could take shots for her :)

Another vote for a forum like Purestorm or Model Mayhem. If she joins one of those, she should be able to get photos for time spent posing in order to build up her portfolio.

I'm not saying that every photographer on those forums is the next budding David Bailey or Patrick Lichfield, but there should be enough who know how to wield a camera that will be able to let her have a few photographs in exchange for her time spent modelling with them, without it costing her an arm or a leg.
