Ok, so I haven't needed to use a line yet... but I'm just waiting for the day to get contacted by a model that I don't really want to shoot be it because of her look/style/unsuitedness. And I don't just mean ugly! Like for example you may not have liked her really really wierd haircut, or she has lots of tatoos and you weren't interested in shooting people of that style, or lots and lots of piercings... or she's just not to your photography taste looks wise...

So, what lines do you use to politely tell them "no" without hurting their feelings?

"I'm sorry, you don't fit the brief I'm working to, but I'll consider you for future shoots if anything comes up"

If they're professional, they'll understand that they can't be right for every job, and if not, you don't want to be working with them anyway.

Ohhh, I like that! That's very good, really takes the edge off a direct knockback.

you kind of asnswered your own question with the line not to my photograhy tastes I think. as long as you are polite and professional with folks..........

the question i had was why do you shoot models?

if it's just for your own enjoyment, the of course you should only have models to your own taste. if it's with a comercial goal in mind, you really need to be able to deliver the goods even when you don't like the shots yourself. so it's all good practice and we all need practice.

I shoot models for 2 reasons, neither being commercial! First and foremost is personal enjoyment, and secondly it's practice. I'm still exploring different areas of photography and trying to find the bit I'm best at + enjoy. For this reason I only want to shoot what I like, but I'm somewhat lenient, because I do want the practice too. For those times of glut (which I'm sure will be seperated by vast famines!) I would like to avoid offending people if I need to knock them back.

You could turn the professional bit round and say that as a photographer you should shoot her anyway, after all work is work and a bit of diversity never did any harm.

just say that you are not suitable because of your tatatoos etc for your photography. models tend to ignore you rather than reply, you can also be quite specific about they type of model you want to shoot when you put out a casting.

here is a recent post casting I put out for glamour & lingerie

"I'm looking for a slim model for fashion and lingerie shoot at bent brae studios. Model must have a waist 27 inches or smaller and hips no larger than 37 inches. body art and piercing not a problem neither is hair colour. Model also must have a selection of MATCHING lingerie (e.g. same colour and style).

If you don't have a full body shot (lingerie) in your port please can you provide one"

makes sure you get pretty much exactly what you want. its pretty much what agencys get (well a bit more detailed like hair colour, length, chest size etc) Its reduced the amount of mingers and chubby wanna be models that I tended to get.

Are these people contacting you via Model Mayhem? I have had a few contacting me that way and thought "Err no!".

How about "AAAAGGGHHHHH get out you freak, your full of metal and covered in ink" And just run out the door?

Just a thought :)

Model Mayhem is the lesser of the evils. There are some really good models and photographers there.

The worst for people wanting something for nothing is Pure Storm and Net Portfolio, with are stuffed to the rafters with deluded models who an agency wouldn't give a second glance to.

Hasn't actually happened me yet on MM. On Purestorm I had a few contact me looking for me to pay them to model (how they considered themselves models really amazed me...) but thankfully I could respond with "Only interested in TFCD, but will consider you in the future yadda yadda"

On MM I've had a couple that I thought... ok, just cos I need the practice! But I foresee a time where I'll want to say no

John, is that from the film Airplane?!? Sounds like a quote from it!

I have had a few who were just hideous wanting me to come to them and pay them £30-50 per hour or pay them time and travel. They had other conditions too. I wouldn't have shot them for free unless it was as a favour for a friend etc.......

Well make sure you have a wide angle handy to get everything in the frame :p

Well, as Robert Capa once said "if your photos aren't good enough you're not close enough"... but I'm thinking about 4 miles might be close enough

Do other female photographers offering TFP/CD get men wanting to photograph them ?

I advertised recently for female models to do a shoot with in a field of flax (I had in mind the feel of that old flake advert). Had four men apply, one I have since had a great shoot with but one wanted edgy shots, I asked what he meant by edgy and to maybe give some examples - his response was to send me links to sites with .............. um ....... bits pointing skywards and also wanted to be totally covered in oil. When I said no - no excuses used I just declined, he offered to pay me £25 - maybe a few extra 0's might have swung it but I charge more than that for a paid session!

you obviously don't like "art nude" then;)

You could always tell them you have an iPhone 4, wait until they're mid sentence then cut the call...

You mean you really use used engine oil for shoots like this ?
Unused engine oil is supposed to be clear(ish).

Interesting discussion here. I never thought that models would bother photographers that much. Maybe that 25st effect is a UK thing?
