Monitor help... contrast ratio?

I am looking at a new monitor for photo editing with good resolution.

The screens I am looking at are Acer, the resolution is 1920x1080 and the size varies between 21.5" & 23".

Also, I have found some screens with 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio, is this good or bad for viewing photos? I would have presumed the higher the number the better?

Gary, I dont have the model u speak of but I have the previous model to this monitor which is LCD and only 500,000:1 contrast ratio. I have to say that it is an exceptional all round monitor. Superb for everyday pc uses and fantastic for image post processing which is what my pc is used for 85% of the time.

I must admit that I dont have the equipment to calibrate it properly so have only ever done it to the best of my ablility by eye using various charts etc. That said I do get excellent results from it and comparisons between lab prints and screen images seem very accurate.

Dont get me wrong im sure there are better monitors on the market and I am no particular expert, but I have owned a fair few different monitors over the years and worked on a good number of different ones in different studios over the last 12 months and my Acer seems to hold its own very well.

Cheap and cheerful. Any monitor will probably require to be calibrated - some calibrate well others don't. If you make money from photography I'd be looking at a high spec model. If not then you have a choice of many.

Contrast ratios quoted like that are pure marketing hype. Far more important is colour rendition and viewing angle. Most people who end up with editing monitors end up buying an IPS (it's the technology used in the panel) screen from the likes of Dell (2209WA or any of the ultrasharp range).

I would deffo give a +1 to the Viewsonic. Personally wouldn't touch any Dell product with a 50ft barge pole as over the years I have had many many problems with Dell products but then I guess its down to personal preference.

As said though really I guess it depends on what you are using it for.
 
Quite like the look of that Viewsonic although I'd like a bit biger
 
Make sure it has a standard Vesa mount on the back, so you can add a holding arm later along the way. Most cheap monitors safe on the height and swivel features and you'll be slouching at your desk to get a good viewing angle.
