Happy with my Giottos 3290 and a plain arca swiss head. It's a 5 section aluminium job. I couldn't see the point of carbon either- much more expensive and little weight saving. I'd also happily use the metal one as a walking pole/bludgeon.
As above, depends on budget. I picked up a second hand Gitzo GM5561T off eBay for less than a hundred. Light, strong and compact, it was a massive improvement on my previous Manfrotto scaffold pole.
