More ram a good idea?

I have 4gig of ram at the mo. One stick. Would another 4gig stick make a difference with Lightroom etc?
 
ive just (today) upgraded my 24" imac from 4GB to 8GB and its really helped both Lion and lightroom

I've also upped my Ram to 8Gb noticed a big difference with/in Photoshop. Always a good idea to increase Ram if possible, also seems dam cheap at the mo
 
i was told that Vista Home Premium is incapable of using more than 4GB RAM

so adding more doesn't do a thing

is that correct....................:thinking:

32bit is limited to 3.5gb I believe, 64bit can use as much as you can install.
 
when I changed from 2 to 4 Gb I noticed a worthwhile improvement, changing from 4 to 8 Gb didn't make any difference at all.

Although it may not boost performance the OP is currently running their RAM in single channel mode.
If 4gb is sufficient I would suggest switching the single stick of 4 for two sticks of 2 and run the RAM in dual channel mode.
It is easier and quicker for a computer to address 4gb of RAM as two sticks in dual channel than one stick in single channel.
 
At current DDR3 prices, I'd say go for another 4GB stick as long as your motherboard can take it. Well worth investing in it with a view to future software upgrades.

Don't know about Vista or Win 7 but XP PRO only shows 3.5GB even with 4GB installed.

I've just done this and there's a small increase in speed in some programs on my Duo Core machine but it does enable me to load a lot more images into my editing program.

If you're running Vista. The best thing you can do is get rid of it. Upgrade to Windows 7 and performance will improve without any hardware upgrades at all...
 
This is an OT question but on my MacBook, with 4GB of RAM, I have a windows 7 32bit partition and when viewing system specs I have only 2.57GB of RAM apparently. All 4GB display on OSX no problem. It doesn't really matter as I never use Windows but it seems odd that this should happen, anyone know why?
 
Can you make more memory available to LR same as you can in PSE?

Could go and check i suppose, but i'm all sat down now on the lappy with a cuppa after a hard weeks toil

My guess without knowing what versions of windows and what hardware.. 32 bit windows and shared graphics memory
