For the last 5 years I've been happily shooting film with a Canon EOS 300 and Canon 28-105 f/3.5 - 4.5 giving, to my eyes, some very good results.
Then when some films went missing recently on their way to Peak Imaging I decided to go digital, and was lucky enough to borrow a Canon 450D and a Nikon D40 from two different friends. The Nikon did it for me, and so I have just picked up a D60 VR kit at the weekend.
I really liked my Canon lens, partly because with the internal focusing elements you could manual focus even in AF mode. The Nikon kit lens won't do this, so I had planned to immediately upgrade to their 18-105mm lens as supplied with the D90 to get this benefit, and some extra range. I tend to shoot portraits and landscapes, so don't need a telephoto, and indeed when the D40 was lent with an additional 55-200mm lens I hardly used it in a week away.
I wonder though, ignoring the benefit of the extra range, will I be getting any better image quality from the 18-105mm lens? Or would I be better off getting fully versed with my new camera, and in time buying something further up the Nikon lens quality ladder?
Thanks
