Moving from Canon to Nikon - lens advice

For the last 5 years I've been happily shooting film with a Canon EOS 300 and Canon 28-105 f/3.5 - 4.5 giving, to my eyes, some very good results.

Then when some films went missing recently on their way to Peak Imaging I decided to go digital, and was lucky enough to borrow a Canon 450D and a Nikon D40 from two different friends. The Nikon did it for me, and so I have just picked up a D60 VR kit at the weekend.

I really liked my Canon lens, partly because with the internal focusing elements you could manual focus even in AF mode. The Nikon kit lens won't do this, so I had planned to immediately upgrade to their 18-105mm lens as supplied with the D90 to get this benefit, and some extra range. I tend to shoot portraits and landscapes, so don't need a telephoto, and indeed when the D40 was lent with an additional 55-200mm lens I hardly used it in a week away.

I wonder though, ignoring the benefit of the extra range, will I be getting any better image quality from the 18-105mm lens? Or would I be better off getting fully versed with my new camera, and in time buying something further up the Nikon lens quality ladder?

Thanks

Bad move! :(

My friend had 18-105 lens, and he passed it on. Get something from Nikkor range with f/2.8 constant aperture (old ones included).

Canon 28-105 is a good lens, but I discovered that it is a big no no for group shots.

Helpful post :nono:

I'd avoid the 18-105mm , if you want an all in one lens wait and buy the 18-200mm VR , I recently acquired one and while it's not in the same league as the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR I was pleasantly surprised as it's very good and useful when you just want to go out with one lens.

Your only limiting factor with the D60 is you need AF-s lenses to retain autofocus , apart from that it's a very good camera.:)

Apparently the Sigma 18-200mm OS is better... Or so I have been lead to believe. And on the plus side it is near half the price of the Nikkor!

I've been quite happy with the 18-105mm so far.

If I had something similar to compare it with I might feel otherwise - who knows

Hi James, welcome to the forum, and Nikon!

What lens did you pick up with the D60 kit? Is it the 18-55VR?

Hi Dave

Thanks - yes got the 18-55mm VR kit lens, which is giving some very good results, hence the question on whether it's worth upgrading or not. Seems the consensus is not to.

I saw a marked step up in quality when I bought a better quality lens to replace the Canon kit one, so I had thought that might be the case here.

Presumably you mean moving to that lens is a bad move rather than moving from film to digital or horror of horrors, moving from Canon to Nikon ;)

Actually I really liked the 450D too, but the Nikon felt like better value and has left me with something like £150 for some accessories or a lens upgrade.

James, ignore fanboys, whatever move is right for you is the right one.
