Moving to FF - 6D or D610

Moving back to a DSLR from Fuji, like the X-T1 but find it a bit too small for my hands to use easily, previously had a 70D with Sigma 35mm, but if I go back to DSLR I want FF.

As I currently have no lens from either brand I can go either Nikon or Canon. I don't think I can stretch to a 5D3 and the D750 is also a little too expensive. Leaving the choice between the 6D from Canon and the Nikon D610.

Its main use will be for travel and family shots, some portraits and I will be at a few weddings over the next year or two. I don't plan on any significant wildlife shooting regularly but may be going on safari again at some point (would hire lenses).

Any thoughts between the two?

In terms of lenses I am thinking the Sigma 35mm again and an 85mm 1.8, although a good zoom could probably cover all I need for now as the DOF will be much shallower than I have had with the crop sensors. The 24-105 Canon or 24-120 Nikon seem the best bets, conscious of not going with lenses that are too big to lump around all day while traveling and at weddings.

I know it won't help much but I don't think it matters what you go for.

I would normally suggest this to anyone looking for a camera anyway, but given your reason for moving away from the Fuji, then it still definitely applies - go to a shop to buy and have a good play with both, see which feels better in your hand, how the controls are laid out, do they work for you, with a lens mounted on it aswell, see if the balance feels right. Both will be incredibly capable cameras for almost any use, so it comes down to what you are comfortable with.

I have never used a Canon camera in my life, but do go out shooting with guys who use them. They have never used Nikon, but shoot with guys that use Nikon, both makes are equally as good as each other in the right hands. Both brands can take excellent images and have a good range of lenses and accessories.

The most important thing is try each of them and see if you like the layout and feel of either brand better.

I hate the Canon layout, simply because I have always shot Nikon, Canon users will say they hate Nikon for the same reason......:)

I very much like my 6D but if I was not already tied in to Canon lenses I would have chosen the D610 instead. Superior multipoint AF, ability to AF @ f/8, 100% viewfinder, and dual SD card slots make it the more complete product.

Edit: If purchased with the 24-105mm "kit lens" the 6D offers very decent range, IQ and value. I would however recommend the Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 VC over the 24-105 if you can live without the longer end. The Tamron is a great walkabout lens for either Canon or Nikon FF bodies. I use it far more than any of my L lenses.
