Moving to full frame camera this weekend, and Im looking for advice on what lens to buy.
I want a wide/UWA lens first of all, which ones do you recommend?
Im moving to the Nikon D750.
Please post your comments and suggestions!

I would look at any of the following

Nikon 14-24 2.8 - expensive, great image quality, 2.8 constant, expensive filter system (if required)
Nikon 16-35 4 - constant f/4, very big for what it is, alot of distortion from 16-18mm (fixable in Lightroom etc), excellent IQ, normal 77mm filter ring
Nikon 18-35 3.5-4.5 (af-s version) - not used it but heard it's actually very good, possibly a touch sharper than the 16-35 but not weather sealed, no VR, not built as well
Cosina / Vivitar / Tamron 19-35 - really cheap, not bad IQ, useless wide open but good from f/5.6 onwards, 2nd hand around £80-100

Various Nikon UWA primes.
Various Samyang manual focus UWA primes.

A few to get you going.

Sigma 12-24mm. An amazing lens and the lack of distortion will make you think it uses Voodoo.

Thanks both!
Woof woof, do you have any shots to share taken on a 12-24?

I've used a few UWA's on a D700 and I'm currently using a Samyang 14mm on the D750.

The Cosina 19-35 is a great way of seeing if you like wide angles without dropping a large amount of money on one and for the price it's hard to beat. You could also keep your eye out for a S/H Sigma 15-30. I had one and it was a great lens for the price (I paid £160) the only reason I sold it and got the Samyang I'm currently using is that I want to give astrophotography a blast at some point. On the subject of the Samyang, the image quality is great, and they're crazy wide. They're not the easiest lens to use because they are so wide and they do produce some strange distortion if there's horizontal lines in the picture, but I absolutely love mine.

First of all what is your budget?

The AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 ED N lens Is what I would recommend. It is a good fast focus lens as a general purpose lens costing around £1200 . Limiting yourself to wide angle lens limits what you can do with a camera. With 24.3 Megapixels to play with and possibly even higher shooting in TIFF give plenty of flexability to get closeup shots via editing without much or and picture deteriation loss

Have you read this???

Don't forget you can take panoramic shots and stitch them together for views as wide as you like See example below

photos using the 24-70mm lens I mentioned. width viewed 69 ft. from 9 feet away( nearest point) using 3 stitched photos
The path does curve in case your wondering, I could have made it straighter but just to show you do not need and ultra wide lens
Done with Pano stitching in Adobe Elements 11

For a UWA zoom, I have a feeling you have a choice between the Sigma 12-24s (2 versions IIRC) and the rather more expensive 14-24 Nikkor f/2.8. A fair few primes available, ranging from the Sigma 8mm fisheye (retains AF etc) through the Samyang 8mm (Nikon mount has auto aperture IIRC but is MF only) and up through a few 14mm options (I have the Tamron 14mm and it seems to distort less than the Samyang, as well as retaining full auto functions).

No not seen this, I'll be sure to check my serial number eek!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions gonna look into them tonight.. As for budget haven't really set one as im unsure on what prices to expect...
The stitching idea is a great idea and something I will try this, but I do a lot of photos at car shows where I don't always have the ability to do this so for these occasions it will be nice to have a wide angle too :)

Depends where your buying from, but I would get the 24-120mm f4 lens to go with the camera. I bought another D750 this week from Panamoz and it's a very good lens for the price. 24mm at it's wdiest is quiet wide on full frame and the zoom is very versatile. You can add one of the Samyangs mentioned above, if needed at a later date.

Edit:
To add: My current one and the last one were un-affected by the current shutter issue, as with Panamoz they have such a quick turnover they seem to be factory fresh.

I think I'll be looking at the 14mm primes then, just gotta find one now! Altho the Samyang is MF?
Maybe 12-24 will be better.
Thanks all :)

I don't find the manual focus to be an issue with the Samyang. It's so wide you can just stick it to F8 and everything will be in focus!

Also some have a focus confirmation chip that shows the focus inductor in the viewfinder.

You dont need an ultrawide for cars, i shot these with a D750 and 24-85mm VR http://gcphotography9757.zenfolio.com/p673747168 and the flip out screen allows you to get low down without breaking old bones like mine

Do you really want/need ultra wide, if so and want to use filters then the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 is the best but if you only need the 24mm range then the 24-85mm VR for around £230 used is a bargain, i have never ratet the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, its over priced, over rated, overdue an ugrade and too bleedin big

So those photos were taken on the kit 24-85? If so I might pop into curry's tomorrow and get one...
Also that's the reason I've had the d750 and not the 810! I got the d5100 years ago as I was spending so much time on my knees with my d50, and vowed if ever a fx with a tilt screen came up I'd have it, last year I was over the moon when nikon announced the d750 and I'm finally in a position to part with some cash :D
Anyway you have now tempted me with the kit lens as it would mean I can pick one up tomorrow... I was just nervous as the 18-55 on the DX was never wide enough and I don't seem to have the brainpower to work out if 24mm on a fx is wider than than 18 on the DX lol

Dont pay £400 at Currys when you can get it here for under £300 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Nikon...679?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a977815c7

Hmmm, endless budget eh? I love spending other people's money ;)

UWA? 12-24mm f2.8 is one of the best. I personally have the 18-35mm and can confirm it is very sharp. I like this lens as it is light and small so good for trekking across the Derbyshire Peaks. I find this FL too wide for car shows though and distorts the cars too much. Personal preference though.

My favourite lens with the D750 is the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII, just a dream combination. Sharp even wide open, and renders beautifully.

I can also recommend the Tamron 150-600mm VC.

Hmmmm I'm just always dubious about Hong Kong locations... I just feel with my luck I'm better paying more and buying from a location that, should it go tits up, I can get to and rant to someone about lol :)
Don't get me wrong I'd love to save £100 but don't want the hassle if there is a problem...if they are in the UK and local so I could get it this weekend I'd do it!

They are in the UK so no problems there, in case you werent aware Nikon warranties on lenses are valid worldwide so it makes zero difference where you but the lenses from, Bodies only have a valid warranty from the source country

When I clicked on the link provided it said Hong Kong... Useful info about lens warranty tho... I'll double check the validity of this company and if they can offer quick delivery I'll get it! :)

I have both the Cosina 19-35mm and Sigma 12-24mm lenses bought secondhand, the Cosina cost me £79 and the Sigma £260, albeit both are Canon versions. The Cosina has a low quality build but produced acceptable images, it was made redundant by the arrival of the Sigma. The Sigma 12-24mm was, until very recently, the widest rectilinear lens for Canon full frame, until the arrival of the the mega expensive Canon EF 11-24mm lens (at £2799!). I'm not familiar with the native Nikon UWA lenses, but note that there is a big difference in the field of view between 12mm and 14mm settings than 2mm might suggest. I'm very happy with the Sigma, which provided me with the widest possible angle at the most reasonable cost when buying secondhand.
The Sigma is available with the Nikon mount and there are 2 versions. Online reviews suggest:
Mk 1. Needs stopping down to F8 to sharpen up the image corners. Minimal distortion. I have the Mk 1. No native filter solution
Mk 2. Sharper wide open but produces much more complex distortion which requires rectification in post. More expensive, available new. No native filter solution.

The OP wants an FX wide angle lens and the posted link comes up with the majority of DX standard zoom lenses where a DX lens is the winner
out of curiosity, what is it that i need to look for in the lens name to tell me if its suitable for DX or FX? A lot of the DX lenses I had actually had "DX" on the lens, but I also had a couple that didnt mention DX at all, yet they were DX lenses. Just so I know what to look for when I want further lenses...
Also currently scouring the net for any of the lenses mentioned to see what I can pick up this weekend, so a massive thanks for the huge amount of responses and valuable info from you all :)
Ill keep you posted with what I get :D

Its different for each manufacturer but for Nikon heres a guide http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Nikon/Nikon-SLR-Lenses

If you want really ultra wide, how about the venerable 6mm 2.8 from Nikon? It's so wide, it can see behind itself. Budget would need to be truly unlimited though, as they cost north of £50,000. http://petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2012/04/6mm_mini.jpg

Joking aside, I have the nikkor 14-24 2.8 and find it to be excellent. I bought it based on reputation and I have not been disappointed yet.

Does seem a little like you have money to burn.
.
Lol no far from it, its just sometimes i think you get what you pay for, and with my luck if i buy from some company thats perhaps not so well known or only operates on the web, ill end up getting stung. i always seem to get the one dodgy fake, so id rather just pay a little more and have piece of mind. ive been stung before!

Thanks for the link Gary...

Yorkshire chap i remember when that was "released" and seeing it on facebook! I currently have a much more reasonably price 10.5mm tho thanks haha ;)

On Nikkor lenses, Dx will usually be featured in the model designation. Sigma call their Dx (and Canon crop) lenses DC while their FF lenses are designated DG. Tamron use DiII to denote crop lenses and IIRC Tokina have borrowed Nikon's DX nomenclature.

All DX lenses have DX on then as far as I'm aware. Lenses without DX are FX lenses. FX lenses don't say FX on them, they just don't say DX. My guess is the lenses you had without DX on were indeed FX (assuming they were Nikon) and so suitable for your new camera. 3rd party lenses have different labels for APS and FF.

Which lenses did you have that didn't say DX?

A 70-300 snerkler and if it turns out to be fx suitable I'll kick myself lol

Nikon 70-300mm VR? That's definitely FX and a good lens to boot. The non VR is also FX I believe but isn't great so no loss.
