Moving up from a D60

Hi,

I have decided that I want to upgrade from a D60 to something with abit more 'va va voom'

I primarily do motor sport but I like to dabble in all things 'photography' so something that can do well at higher ISO's etc will be beneficial. I don't use the pre-set settings any more. I just use Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual

I was looking at the D90 as being the logical step up from the D60 but I am now playing the...
'New D90 vs used D300' argument out in my head!

If I were to sell my D60 it may be a while before I find a good second hand D300 at a reasonable price and I don't think I want to risk being camera-less for too long esp in this season! I am also not a fan of the small D90 size, I feel it would need a grip to be nicely balanced with the 70-200 2.8.

So what would should I be doing here?! Which would be the better body in general, and more importantly is the huge price difference justified?

Go d300 i know i would if i had the money, save over the season and use what you got i know its hard when you really want something but ive wanted the 300 since launch but my funds mean it will be a long time and thats even second hand.
Too be honest a good deal more reach in the glass stakes would be handy for motorsport

Personally I'd go for second hand D300 over a new D90, the high ISO may not be quite as good but it is great to use. I've just picked one up for the wife from here for £750 with a shutter count of just 2600 - they do come up fairly frequently so you wouldn't be without a camera for long.

Having said that if you currently own just the two lenses in your signature you might want to consider some new glass first...

Well I would love to by the 50mm 1.8 but no point atm as no AF motor on the D60 body!

I would also be looking at replacing the kit lens range with some nicer glass.

But its a case of upgrading the body first in my mind, the lack of AF in the body makes it harder to chose new glass.

£700-750 seems to be about the going rate for the D300. I should think I can get approx £250 - 275 for the D60 with all the bits that go with it so would need to put £500 towards it which really isnt that bad.

Just sold mine on eBay for £815 :D

Yeah eBay prices are always a touch higher than on here.

Although I half feel that I would be buying a D300 at the worst time with the D400 on the horizon.

Don't worry about the D400 or D300s as current rumors put it.

The D300 is still and will be for a very long while a very capable camera & will hold it own even up against the next couple of gen camera's from Sony, Nikon themselves & Canon.

There are plenty of used D300's on the market mainly because alot of people buy them & can't use it as it does take some setting up to get the best out of it.

Also as they upgrade to the D700, etc. :)

You get 51 focus points with the D300, better for motorsport i'd guess over the D90 which has 11 points. It's one of the only things that let the D60 down only having 3, but you get what you pay for i suppose !

So for a motorsports camera combined with a 70-200 F2.8 would you go for the D300 over the D90?

Regardless of the lens, if you need it for motorsport then the 51 AF points would be very handy for you. That said, I've seen some cracking motorsport shots on here taken with a D90.
