I don't know if anyone follows search engine stuff, but I've noticed a few hits from MSN UK Search and over the past few months I've been slowly gaining on the Photography Forums position :D I'm now right beneath you in 6th place for the term photography. First place will be mine! :D

Add a description to your pages in the <head> of the pages including your keywords and a couple of alt tags and bingo!

Meta tags don't work anymore. I've got all the alt attributes setup too :)

what alt tags Pete?

I've just got the normal ones really. Anything that needs an alt attribute has one corresponding to the link. All the images have the alt attributes of their filenames.

i still have no idea what they are...give me a code example...please....pwetty please

Oh :) Basically for every image you have you need to have an alt attribute so that if someone disables images they still know how to get around the site and what everything means. Its not only for people who disable images, but for screen readers for the disabled. Search engines also like alt attributes as they have relevance to the content of your page.

For example

Code:
<img src="image.jpg" alt="An image of a sunset" />

Meta tags do still count, with your title tag bieng the best realestate you have. Use short titles with the most important keywords listed first. Also use actual text on the page with your keywords as high as possible.

Nah, the main search engines don't use them these days. None of my sites use meta tags and all have decent rankings. They go on content as its harder to build an entire site based on a lie than it is to fake a meta tag.

I'm not really going for keywords on my site as its nothing but photos. I was simply pointing out that I'm one behind these ere forums and about to over take :D I'm surprised you didn't mention semantically valid XHTML and proper use of CSS as search engines love them too.

Indeed, also you collect all your javascript and put it in a file then call it from the file when needed.
Sorry this is the wrong forum to be discussing this :eek:ops:
One last note though, if the algorithym is looking at 2 sites that are scoring the same then a meta tag can swing it, along with lots of topic related backward links with keywords close to the link text.

Javascript? Pfft. CSS can do most of the fun things these days and is search engine friendly :) Don't forget seo urls either :) I'd say they were more important than meta tags. They really don't use them. Title, yes, but description/keywords, Google and others will just ignore them.

Sorry, Pete. Looks like you've dropped a slot today... somebody else is obviously using the same tricks as you ;)

Hehe :D Yer dunno wtf happened there. I did add some new shots to my site. Oh well, the joy of seo :D I'll beat this forum one day, somehow! ;)

type 'new imagery' into MSN...

I remember when I was top of Google for "Sandra Bullocks Breasts".. ah those were the days. I believe it was one of Pete's comments that caused it to happen. :D

i dont recommend that now!

Yey, beat ya :D I'm now 5th. Soon I will be the number 1 site for photography on MSN UK. Then I can stand on a hill and shout with glee, as that seems to be the right thing todo in these circumstances. :)
