recieved two new reflective brolly's todays, so tonight i set everything up, set the onboard flash to commander mode and no flash.

whatever i do, even in auto mode, i cant get the onboard to fire :thumbsdown: . in auto, every time you half press the shutter it tries to click open the flash although its already open ?

something clearly not right and i just packed my gear away and started sulking like an infant. Bottom lip out any everything :cuckoo:

thankfully i have a 3 year whatever happens extended warranty, so lets see how that pans out.

in the meantime i'm not looking forward to being without my awesome camera.

i had to get that off my chest :bang: . Thanks for listening

Aye, using the onboard pop-up flash in commander mode, it provides no light on the subject, but operates my two sb600's in TTL mode.

But it isn't a general setting thing. As i said, even if i pop the camera into dork mode , the flash pops up but doesn't fire.

Okay was just to clarify, you mentioned Comander mode and I figured that was what you meant. Have you set the SB's to master or slave?

Have you had this set up working previously?

If you have the onboard flash set to commander and at least one of slave channels set up in a group then the onboard will fire regardless of the SB600 settings. Yes i have two sb600's for subject lighting, two yongnou 460II's for a hilite, used to good effect on many occasions.

I'm pretty sure the onboard flash has died, but i need to try and reset the camera as suggested earlier, also it might be good to know from another d90 user if the onboard flash clicks each and every time the shutter is half pressed. I get the feeling that the camera keeps thinking that the pop-up isnt open.
 
Yes, I think you could be right, unfortunately.

Might sound slightly daft, but try opening and closing the flash a few times, it be a possible loose connection, if you can rule out software issue then you can confidently send back under warranty.

Ok, I don't want to sound like I'm teaching you to suck eggs...

But you did change the on camera flash settings from Commander to TTL/other when you put it in Auto, right?

Yes i did set it back to TTL, but i also noticed that the flash options are disabled when in Auto mode, which i assume means that the camera has taken over anyway.
 
Try switching to Manual and dialling in 1/125, f/8 and ISO200 and see what happens, it may well be that if you are in Auto with either a high ISO manually set or Auto-ISO that the camera has decided there is no need for flash, as it can raise the ISO/open the shutter longer/open the aperture instead.
 
At least a Nikon can control off camera flashes without buying extra bits.

There's some new information come to light that may explain the flash problem. It's in the form of a small girl aged 4 who likes to (rip)open the flash without pressing any buttons :eek:

I think that may explain it, unfortunately no warranty covers 4yr olds - I hope you have insurance?

You don't need to with the D90 - AUTO over-rides any manual flash settings you have :)

i have the dixons 'whatever happens' thingybob, so lets see how that works!

Its typical. looks like i'm off to Singapore to work for a month or so, in the next few weeks. I was looking forward to taking my camera :bonk:

lets pray for a fast turnaround !

further to my last, further probing might point to my mrs thinking that it's the correct way to pop the flash up :cuckoo: .

Question a 4 year old and they say pretty much anything though!

Flash, tried that but still no flash.

Also tried to reset the camera, but the menu only gives a 'reset custom setting' which i assume doesn't reset everything to factory, or does it?

Thanks, if i didn't have the extra cover on the camera i'de have been in there like a rat up a pump. Bits lying everywhere and all that!

Really sorry to hear that! I can only imagine, that in wilko's world the canon would have tucked itself away out a danger as the child approached:lol:

Its excellent, I bought a portable DVD about 4 years ago, my son (also 4) decided to throw it down the stairs, I took it into Curry's with my policy, they didnt even look at it, he checked stock....none.

£150 worth of vouchers were emailed to me within 24hrs.

I only paid £99 for the thing in the first place!!

Unfortunate to hear the little one was a bit too enthusiastic about learning how to use the flash!

That's good to know as I got that on my D90 for five years :thumbs:
 
i've just had a thought. i sold the kit lens a while back. i'll need it if its a straight exchange ? hopefully they will just send the body for repair ?
 
I had this problem with a D90 a year or so ago, turned out to be a sensor/switch was stuck under the pop up flash. I had to unscrew the pop up flash and put it right. I'm afraid I cant remember all the details but I diagnosed it by doing a Google search on the problem and come across a good tutorial on how to fix it.

Care full though while digging around in there, the capacitors in the flash carry a fair wallop!

Yup, there's a video tutorial on how to fix it (I've linked to it here on TP before), I think it was for the D40x, but the principle is the same...
