... first I had problem with hair on my sensor so I got rid of that now everytime I want to take a photo my red focus points don't show? What have I done?

If I were you, I honestly wouldn't tamper with your camera anymore and hopefully it's still under Warranty so you can contact Canon or wherever you bought it from and get it sorted out by a professional.

It's quite likely that you'll have to pay as well. Jessops provide a service, you may want to try SRS in Watford, give them a call as well.

What mode are you shooting in? i just twiddled through my modes and in sports mode the red-dots dont flash up! Not sure if that is the answer your after, i cant help anymore than that as i usually use Av Tv or M and they always come up!

Matt

I've not got a 450D but the focus points don't show on all modes on my 40D. I hope that is the reason yours aren't visible either. Will save yo a few quid if nothing else. Hope its OK.

Thanks I hope it's ok too, the red focus points are not coming up on any mode not even manual mode!

Just checked on my 40D and they do show in 'M'. Oh dear. Do they show in any mode at all?

Ok try this. Stay in manual, press the button top right of the back screen (has a little magnifying glass and a + sign in it) this button is to do with manually selecting focus points! Think it might alter when you press this!

Are you in AF Servo mode? had a quick twiddle with the camera, and the red dots don't seem to come on in that mode.

Damn... too late ;)

When you press the 'AF point select' button and look through the viewfinder, do they show up at all? Move the click wheel around and see if any of them light up.

Chris

Forget the AF thing. Mine com on even if the lens is set to Manual once it is in focus

Yes, those 2 buttons are to set focus points manually and even those aren't working, the red dots wont come up at all!
Is the lens set to AF?
No, MF!

No i'm in one shot.

They don't show up when I press the + mangnify glass butt or when I turn the wheel!

So 'did' mine but unfortunately not anymore.

Have you tried putting the camera back to factory settings

Looks like a trip to 'Mr Fix It Man' for you. That's a b****r. :-(

Have you tried removing the lens, trying another lens, removing the battery ?

How do I do that?
QUOTE]

Put the camera in 'P' mode for example & then...........

menu/custom functions/clear settings/clear all camera settings/ok

Give it a go,nothing to lose.

For info, i get no focus dots in sports mode.

Ok i'll try that :)
If the lens is set to MF then the camera won't be auto focusing. Set it to AF.

I don't want to auto focus though, i want to manual focus myself :/

That's the problem then. The red dots are there to show you which autofocus point has been selected for the shot. But you're not using autofocus so it doesn't matter.

Ah, and you're wondering why the red dots, the AUTO FOCUS POINTS aren't lighting up?! The dots light up to tell you where the camera is autofocussing on! Which is why they're not lighting up now, because you're manually focussing!

...erm, why would auto focus points show up on MF mode???? Lol, thats your answer!!!!

...or...

If you want manual, why do you want AF points?

Do'h! Just double check they still work then by switching to AF and make sure they appear!

I just had a look; when in MF and a point is in focus (with the shutter half-depressed), it will still flash red. I don't think it matters that much if they don't though, it just means the camera doesn't think the image is in perfect focus.

That's the thing though folks, when I was in MF the red dots were coming up when I was using M mode to take photos and even after changing to AF the red dots don't show, the lens just moves aroiund itself :/

Just tried it on mine, in mf the red dot lights up when you manually focus to the point where the auto-focus would have, if that makes sense.

sounds like you may have doen something to the focusing screen then if it can't AF

Yes that's what I mean, I could still get red focus points in MF and now I can't get the AF either :/

Right..........well if you switch the lens to AF, then try and focus on something (just put it into auto), do the points light up? If they do, then you haven't broken anything, if they don't, then you have!

daft question, but if you don't want to autofocus then what use are the red dots?
But the camera doesn't choose focus points for me, I chose them myself by selcting the + button :/

I'm confused :/

Yeah I think I did!

Did you say you've tried switching lenses?

Does the lens "hunt" in AF mode and stop out of focus without selecting an AF point? If so the lens could be the issue.
