Picked up my D4 from the office today, along with the WT-5 and GPS unit.

Very quickly, it's wonderful. ISO is great, backlit buttons make a huge difference and the video is superb. XQD card is very, very fast, especially when coupled with a USB 3.0 card reader.

Will post more when I get a chance.

:(

congrats :(

deposit paid.. priority list.. should ahve been getting my 1dx this week'ish ... but put back to end april:(

Enjoy your D4 .. silly thing to say.. know you will :)

If it makes you feel any better, my 1Dx has been pushed back too.

Congrats on the new kit.

I saw the backlit buttons at focus on imaging, and thought what a brilliant idea, why have Canon not done that :(

It's such a simple idea you do sit there and think why no-one has done it before. Will be on all new dSLRs no doubt.

Do you have a D3S? I would love to see a direct comparision of the two, I'm interested to see what changes there are to the image quality,

Stuart

I do have a d3s and the quality is better but not the jump that going from the d3 to d4 is.

High ISO is a lot better. Need to play around with the RAW files but the JPEGs look very good.

Yes, d4 over the d3s. The d3s was very good, the d4 is exceptional.

But I will say, the 1dx and d4 are almost the same now whereas the d3s was much better than the mk4.

It has been done before, maybe not by Canon or Nikon.
The Olympus E620 had them but they never appeared on their 'pro' bodies, the general reason/excuse/guess given was down to weatherproofing. Maybe whatever the reason was has been overcome by Nikon?

I like the idea of backlit buttons, I was forever hitting the wrong button when I try to turn the light on the top panel on my 7D and 5D2. I suppose I'd get used to it, but I hardly ever shoot in the open at night time so I hardly ever turned it on.
Enjoy your new toy, will be interested to see some real world photos from it. I'm just waiting for my 5DMkIII to arrive (very soon I hope).

A quick test shot I took yesterday. EXIF data can be seen here http://www.flickr.com/photos/inkiboo/6881923230/meta/in/photostream

got anything at 6400? :D

I have to say the noise on the 6400 at full size is not very impressive and not better than D3S in the light. The picture is not very sharp, assuming from EXIF it is the NIKON 105 then D4 may be more "picky" on sharpness, which may be either jpeg settings or perhaps camera shake as the 105 has good resolving power. Obviously the smaller the pixles the more potential you have for shake showing.

The lens on was the 28-300 so not the sharpest in the world. My 24-70 and 14-24 are miles from me now but will test when I get them back.

To be honest, thats worse than my D3S at ISO 8000

a bit of motion blur, mostly underexposed just to balance small patch of bright area - what do you expect?

Motion blur, from what exactly, even if there is, and there isn't, along with the undexexposure you say is also in there then it's not really the ideal sample to be posting now is it, like i said worse than my D3S

Here's the thing Gary; I'm not posting samples to meet whatever criteria you deem fit. I am using the camera and posting the odd photo here and there.

This sample was shot at ISO25600. Again, I haven't set this up as any test (I didn't even take that photo as I'm in it!) but all I doing is sharing random photos taken with the D4.

If you don't like them, don't look at them.

Hang on Gerard, you're the one who explicitally claimed the images from your D4 are better than a D3S, you posted some images and several of us have begged to differ, some even say the "lowly" D700 is better

I never asked you to post any images to meet any criteria let alone mine

Ive said these samples are worse than my D3S i havent said theyre worse than your D3S, you might have had a poor sample :(

Problem is, when you say

then it's not really the ideal sample to be posting now is it

Then what else do I say back? There is no "ideal" sample unless I get my D3s back from work and do a side by side comparison.

You are comparing my handheld, off the cuff shots taken with a 28-300 to, I assume, your D3s shots taken in anger with 2.8 glass. Very different scenarios. As I have said, the jump from D3 to D4 is huge, the jump from D3s is much smaller.

What I can say is all our photographers who have the D4 and have used it in anger think it is leagues ahead of the D3s.

Bit of a contradiction there

All im saying is that the image of your good lady wife shows much more noise than a similar image i could have taken with my D3S, but some of that could be down to it being a bigger file than a D3S, resampling will have some effect, the last image posted of the group shot is good, But, and heres the thing, its an image you could have captured quite as easily at ISO 3200 or even less as there looks to be lots of decent available light

Ill reserve final judgement until i see some images taken in dark floodlit sports grounds (WHAT I SHOOT) where you need a fast shutter speed so have no choice but to up the ISO, Don't suppose you shoot any floodlit field sports do you.

Gerard, can I ask you to check something for me please?

On your D4, does the battery chamber cover have slight splay in it when locked? With mine I can twist it a little with very little force, compared to my D3s which is solid as a rock even with a bit of force.

I;m wondering if my chamber cover doesn't lock in fully and this makes me worry water may get passed he rubber seal if its not sitting tight

Sorry to half hijack the thread but we are on the topic of it and I didn't want to start a new thread for this as it isn't a comprehensive test.

But, I thought I'd do a quick and dirty D4 v D3s ISO 12800 test for the benefit of anyone in this thread who is interested. I've not done any other comparisons yet in the real world, and this was just a quick set up, shoot and be done.

Both camera's locked off on tripod via the lens collar of the Sigma 150 macro (so framing could be kept the same when I switched cameras over).

All settings on both cameras the same, set in manual, including white balance at 4k, even though D3s looks warmer than the D4. Also, despite the same settings the D3s looks a tad under exposed which won't help the noise.

Noise reduction OFF in both cameras and I double checked in Capture NX where I discovered the D4 file had a cheeky little amount set in Capture even though off on camera, so I set that back to zero. Sharpening set to 3 on both cameras. Essentially, these images have identical everything.

I'll supply links to larger jpegs saved at quality of 10 under each image (I uploaded full res to photo bucket but it scales them down). Happy to upload raw files if someone can point me in the direction of a good host for them.

So, nothing scientific, but just a quick play.

Settings used: ISO 12800, 1 second exposure at f2.8

I'm not a betting man, but I'd say although I'd give the nod to the D4, the vast majority would be hard pushed to see a huge difference between these two cameras in general. D4 image is scaled down to match D3s here which helps a little as well. I don't see the point in scaling down but at web size it's pretty irrelevant and as I mentioned above, Photobucket scaled both down when I uploaded them :(

Thanks for the comparison pictures!

My conclusion from this and other reviews is that the difference between the D4 & D3S in terms of high ISO performance is negligible, but of course there are plenty of other reasons to warrant the upgrade, for me personally the improved autofocus together with AF at f8 (meaning the use of 1.7 & 2x TC's on f4 lenses) was a good enough reason to upgrade.

I'm lucky enough to also have a D3s and a D4, though as yet I've not had the chance to do much in the way of direct comparison as I've only had the D4 for a few days!

I have the same on my battery. Will speak to the Nikon rep when I next see him and ask.

In other news, the 1Dx is delayed until at least very late April/May.

I've had an email from another photographer asking if mine did it, as his did. He had already beaten me to the punch of calling NPS and they told him that's how it is supposed to be as they all do it. So that's good, but seems a bit odd :|
