Beginner My first off camera flash

Here is my first atempt of off the camera flash, please let me know how I can improve.

Obviously, it is too dark. See if you can get hold of the inverse square law
as it would help you better place you flash.

A cool thing here is the Rembrandt light on the left eye!
 
I like it myself. I am assuming you were lighting this way to create a mood/scene eg boy/son/yourself watching tv or something that gives off a glow of light (Flash being the tv) If so maybe the back of the tv in the image could help the viewer.

Obviously I maybe wrong. If so feel free to ignore :)

To translate this, the light needs to be closer. The catchlight in the eye, as well as the lack of light, suggests your light needs to be closer or on a higher setting. For soft light closer, for hard light with defined shadows the latter option.
 
Thank you, for your very usefull comments. As Cargo said, I was trying to get some 'mood' into the photo. Will defantly try the light closer to see what differance it will make.
