so i sent my 120-300 in for a service, i bought it 2nd hand about 8 months ago and optically it was mint although cosmetically it had seen better days as the rubber coating had worn badly in places but the seller insisted that it had never been dropped etc.. i wasnt worried about cosmetics and the pricetag was worth it so i parted with my cash for this great lens.

anyway there has always been a tight spot in the zoom ring so sent off an email to sigma. they came back and said it be a standard £154 tariff for the repair (possibly a worn zoom bearing) and theyd throw in a free service (well theyd probably have to calibrate it etc anyway after stripping it down). itd be a 2-3 week turnaround.

so off it went to the post office and after having an argument with the lady on the counter that yes i really DID need the 2500 quids worth of insurance/compensation it was winging its way to sigma.

ive just had an update from sigma.. at some point it looks like it has had a bang of some sort and the outer cams and casing of the focus mech have been distorted and need replacing. parts have been ordered from japan urgently but im looking at an extra 1-2 weeks before it comes home.

DOH. :bang:

on the brightside the work is being done at no extra charge, which i think is fantastic of sigma. especially as they already replaced the tripod mount FOC (180 quid part) last year as the thread was knackered...

so cudos to sigma and a plauge of locusts to the seller of the lens.

Nice result for you and a big  for Sigma servicing, nice to know as I have 2 Sigma lenses(70-200/100-200)

That's outstanding customer service ; good for you to be able to get all that done for free!

Any idea how much it would have cost you, had Sigma not offered this for free?

I`ve never had any work needed by sigma (touch wood) but i`ve always found sigma to to be really helpful with any questions i`ve had, sound stupid but when i phone them it feels like i`m on the phone to a mate chatting about lenses, they are happy to chat on the phone 10-15mins no problem, no bull either.

My son knocked a cup of coffee over the table and onto a 1.4x teleconverter which I had stupidly left on there. My wife decided, in her wisdom, to pick up the teleconverter and shake the coffee off .. so all the sticky liquid then went into the electronics and gunked up the aperture lever. Sigma quoted me £70 to clean it so I sent it away to be sorted but after 4 weeks decided to phone and see what was occuring. After a chat about a couple of lenses that need cleaning I asked about my teleconverter and it seems they took it apart by snapping some lugs round the seals .. and then found they had no new ones in stock to refit to the TC. :bang:

Took 3 months in the end.

Neil,

You must be well chuffed, it will be like new and I would always rather have optically perfect than cosmetically perfect! Should be nice once it is back.

So £154 all sorted inc postage with a new carry strap......

Sounds good to me :)

I'm hopefully going to have my experience to add to this on Friday...we'll see if they paid any attention to the "i need it for the weekend" bit I mentioned several times to them!

Did you not get a price to replace the rubber coating too :)

:'(

Well, mine would have been winging its way back to me today...but it's just "not quite right" according to Sigma. He's not happy with the resolution at the long end and it's going to Japan.

6-8 Weeks turnaround...anyone got a 70-200 to lend me?!
