My rant about new iPad (or how to make it useful?)

now would be a good time to stop the bickering guys :)

If one is going to suggest that Android is the best OS for phones, based on nothing more than the fact that they've sold a few percent more in one part of the world; then one should also concede that iOS is the best OS for tablets because it outsells any other OS by a factor of around 5 to 1.

But logic, of course, plays no part in these debates.

You should think about your point, then post it in a coherent way instead of coming across like a little schoolboy. Maybe then you'd be taken a bit more seriously.
If you don't agree Apple is the world's leading mobile phone company, who do you think is?

Erm... Nokia... Who sell significantly more phones than Apple for a start...;)

Apple are one of (if not the leader) in smartphones sales however.

If you want to be pedantic abut others posts at least be correct in your own!

(Queue someone doing the same to me...)

The nokia and Samsung phones include non smartphones. Apple don't make anything but a smartphone. The post above was incorrect to say they lead the mobile phone market it should have said smartphone market. I think apple had the top 3 selling smartphones in 2011.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-28/samsung-beats-apple-as-no-1-smartphone-vendor.html

;)

Although they may have taken the lead more recently.:)

EDIT: Yes http://www.hindustantimes.com/techn...artphone-manufacturer/SP-Article1-803237.aspx

Apparently they just snuck back at the end of the year. Hopefully it'll be a nice fight with the top spot jumping between manufacturers. Great for the consumer and great for the competition.

On to the OP's topic of conversation... I think he made the cardinal error about most current tablets. They are consumption devices rather than production devices, great for reading the news or browsing the web/looking at photos, but other than that... I hardly use mine that I got several months ago because my laptop is still better at 99% of the things I do on the computer (better at internet browsing, photo processing etc). That may all change when we get proper OSs on more tablets (specifically Windows 8) but until then it's a consumption device, no matter how many other accessories you buy to make it seem like it. The next tablet I buy will have to have a full version of Photoshop runnable on it and be able to clip into a keyboard when I want to use it as a proper laptop. Hopefully soon!

Considering they sold 3M of the ipad3 at launch that factor might be at the conservative side ;)

Or... When we add actual facts into the equation...

iOS beats android less than 2:1 in the tablet sales figures...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/dec/25/ipad-tablet-dominates-third-quarter-2011

iOS: 61%
Android: 32%

But yeah! Greater than 5:1!!!!;)

EDIT: And that dropped to 55% in Q4...

Middle of this year before iPads become like iPhones and iOS is a strong second place OS on both?

You have to remember with opening sales figures that Apples are skewed a lot due to the number of buyers who have to have the latest and greatest Apple gadget.

Why are you quoting 2011 figures? The iPad3 wasn't released then....

In addition don't forget the articles you are quoting are units shipped, not necessarily the same as units sold...I mean just take one look around you, on the tube, at Starbucks/Costa etc. Which tablet do you actually see? I've seen in the last year two androids, lots of kindle readers not the tablets, and just iPads...I've never seen a playbook in the 'wild' yet despite most of my clients are bluechip corporates with their own BES, and if we see a touchpad one day that will be because of the firesales (which is actually a shame as in my opinion technically webos had it right)...

I use flickr stacker and that gives much more functionality than flickr's own app and that has no issues with slideshows. :D

And? The 2011 figures are the last quarterly figures to be released. Soon we will see the figures for Q1 no doubt and iPad3 sales will start to count in the Q2 sales figures released in July probably. That's how sales figures work, rather than picking first week sales*. The shipped argument only works when one sales figure is shipped and one is sold. In the articles they will be equivalent, so unless you expect there to be millions of Android tablets lying around in shops and no iPads (ridiculous suggestion) then the figures are fairly accurate for proportion of the market. Whatever way you spin it, long term sales (i.e. over 3 months not a week or two) are not 5:1 in the iPads favour.

It's not exactly a massive leap to assume that android tablets are going to take over from sales of iOS tablets is it, considering exactly the same thing happened with android within a couple of years of release.

I'll admit however the significant amount of tablets you see on the commute to work are iPads, but then you need to remember the sales of iPads have been higher in the past (proportionally) so there are significantly more people with all iPads (1,2 and 3) and most commuters are likely to be on more than average wage so more likely to buy a more expensive tablet. If you read the articles it mentions that most Android tablets are cheaper (sub £200), less likely to be bought by commuters. The profit may well be largely Apples at the moment but as seen by Android on phones a large market share really helps with the apps, which is the significant advantage iOS has over Android on tablets at the moment.

* Which - 1. I've already mentioned Apples slightly different first week sales, due to the number of fanatics and 2. Tablet sales are increasing massively in general, not just Apples sales figures.

EDIT: However if you believe your own sales figures are more reliable than a company specialising in counting electronic devices then you should go into business..;)

Something about my willy being bigger than your willy?

Currently my willy is only 50% as big as your willy.
But apparently you cheated when measuring your willy.
Also sales of your willy are on the decline, whereas mines on the rise! Boom boom!

Apparently the new iPad overheats. Some users noticed that the new iPad has overheating issues. Suddenly, the device displays a temperature warning on a completely black screen and the text "the iPad needs to cool down," appears.

Seems plausible if the processor is firing all those extra pixies.

i wander if all these people moaning about the heat have there ipads stuffed in cheap nasty cases.... and have hot sweaty palms and resting it on there hot sweaty legs...

One report mentioned 15 mins of a driving game, another after 20 of intensive display work. Apples bulletin boards are full of concerned posts.
Seems tweaked.net ran tests and after just 5 mins it was upto 92 F which apple have stated is within normal limits.

I feel cheated, mine doesn't have dodgy screen, wifi issues or overheating problems.

Except there isn't one, only the useless 'archive' where delete should be

There isn't one if you're running Imap via Googlemail, Matty. Only an 'Archive' button- not sure if that's the same for Pop3 accounts or not.

just tried another account - that one has the delete, the google doesn't :bang:. Google mail app is better, but still just a patch of the android one.

Have you been into settings -> mail contacts calendars-> gmail -> and turned "archive messages" off?

There's always a slew of these stories when an Apple product launches....so it gets warm where previous models didn't....big deal.

Try sitting with a Macbook Pro on your lap.

Mine seems fine. Not taken it *that* far tbh. My iPhone barely had a connection about 15 metres away, and my laptop the same.
I doubt I'll get a stable connection much further than 20 anyway :(

I had the ipad2 for a few weeks then got a bit frustrated at the lack of things it could do compared to a laptop, so I gave it to my daughter for school and got myself a little i7 notepad with ssd drive and I'm a happy bunny again! I still love my iphone 4s though as it does pretty much everything the ipad did, and fits in my pocket!

Yes, I think I'll be sending mine back. After 4 hours of watching TV, reading emails, playing Angry Birds - Space and reading PotN and TP my iPad was just slightly warm in one corner. But I had to take it out of the case to feel that.

And my wifi signal insists on being exactly the same on the new iPad and the original iPad. But it's only doing 14m and two exterior walls.

Received mine yesterday.
Have to say I love the screen, but I think I will give it to mu other half so she can use it on the go as a planner etc..

Never had Ipad before but had other android tablets. people are saying that ipad is so much smoother...it is and it isint...new facebook app loads faster on my galaxy nexus than on ipad...
people say there is no lag, stutter on it..there was many times while looking for apps on app store...

so it is not as perfect as some people say it is.
I have to agree that switching from portrait to landscape is smooth and nice, better than on android.

still am looking for apps for it and games...cant wait for it to be jailbroken.

what is for sure, I wont sell it or send it back. I know she would like it to be hers ;) and it will be good for movies on airplanes etc.
