Managed to get out today with my new replaced 7D. I know that some of you are aware of the saga of my camera and that it was replaced by Canon as there was a software problem.

My thoughts were of a slightly mixed bag today and a couple of more variables came into the equation. I was using my new (to me) 300/4 and a 1.4TC, both new experiences. Any disapointing results that I got were probably then down to the new camera and new lens. Oh, and the light wasn't too great either.

Here's a couple of pics - What I did learn was that a prime is a pain when stuff is too close in the frame and still coming towards you :bang:

While this maybe true Sara, the pics look incredibly sharp and contrast is great!
 
The noise isn't overly noticable but it would bother me at that low an ISO, i've had the same issue with my 7d.
 
I am sure that it is just me and my technique and or processing that is causing any problems. I can see the noise too, but I am having a shrug of my shoulders and just hoping to live and learn.

Enough people are getting cracking images from their 7D - Perhaps when it is yours you just get too hyper-critical.
 
Great shots, the typical 7d grain is there i see. Have you sharpened them?
In camera sharpening didnt help the cause so i always kept mine a 0, have you got any noise reduction set?
I found i had to be extremely careful with USM when i had my 7d.
 
Hi Sara. Those are super sharp images. And yes there is some noise on the top one but not overly so and not at all distracting to my eye.

I havent used my 7D at ISO400 yet so cant compare the noise levels that I would get. I've only been out snapping BIF and using ISO3200 and ISO6400 to get a fast enough shutter speed. I invested in Noiseware plugin for CS4 which seems to work pretty well on very high ISO images.

I'll have to get my backside out and do some shooting at ISO400 and thereabouts and do some comparisons against what you are getting and then PP them with and without Noiseware to see what the differences are.

Will post the results as soon as I have them so you can see.
 
They are very nice images.

I don't think there is any visible noise, more likely it is the common JPEG compression artefact. I would be surprised to see obvious noise at that size even with ISO 1600.

Are you applying masking when sharpening? If not, you will have the noise in your OOF areas being sharpened, as well as the edges and details you want sharpened. Also, if you fiddle around with things like "clarity" that can make noise look worse. I don't think your examples above look bad. Maybe more sympathetic processing could improve them a little, maybe not. I don't know. If you want to post a raw file up somewhere I'll happily take a look and see if I can do any better.

If you don't have anywhere to host a raw file you can use a free service like www.yousendit.com to send a link to the file to yourself, and then post that link here in the forum for others to download - or just PM it to me if you'd prefer to keep things on a small scale.
