Hi there,

I'm interested in getting some of the 'glass like' water effects from streams and waterfalls. What sort of ND filter should I be getting - 4stop or 8stop etc?

I have a Canon 18-135 with 67mm filter size, has anyone got any particular recommendations as to make of filter they have had good results with.

Thanks.

Hi

I use a 3Stop Hoya Pro-1 Digital ND8 for milky water effect on waterfalls and a Lee 10Stop for the glass-like,flat calm loch/lake/sea. I'd recommend you buy the best filter you can afford, and also the biggest you are likely to use. Are you intending to buy any larger lenses in the near future 72 or 77mm thread for example? If so you can buy step-up rings for compatibility on smaller lenses if you opt for the larger filter first time around.

The strength of the required filter also depends on the overall brightness of the scene and the specific effect you want therefore there is no correct answer.

I'd recommend getting a 3-stop and a 6-stop, then you could use them together for 9-stops. That range will give you enough for anything. If you only want one, then a 6-stop is probably best.

I like B&W and Heliopan.
