Just read an article in Digital Camera World Magazine for november and they've done a test between 3 Canon and 3 Epson printers. They tested a Canon Pixma MG6250, Pro-1 and Pixma 9000 MkII and Epson Stylus Photo 2000, 3000 and PX830FWD and the prices ranged from £145-695. Unsurprizingly the most expensive, which was the Canon Pro-1, was rated the best on test but the Canon Pixma 9000 MkII was the next best and was rated higher than any of the Epsons.
Overall they rated the 9000 MkII the best for colour images but unfortunately not the best for mono prints as it has no grey cartridge and only 1 black whereas some of the others had more. They listed the price as not far off £400 so if you can get a good deal and you're printing mostly colour it should be ideal.
Looking at the photos of the prints they made the 9000 MkII looked, to me anyway, to be good on mono prints though as the Epson printers seemed to give a colour cast where the 9000 MkII didn't look to do the same.
