Need help with big problem

Edit My Images
No
I have a 450d and a mac.

I have always imported my raw files from the camera into bridge cs3 using the photo downloader.

Today I come to download the 142 photos I took at a wedding this weekend and 80% of the way through it errors saying it can no longer connect to the device, check it is still connected or has a charged battery.
The 120 odd photos that downloaded previously are fine.

Ok so what I have tried is taking some more pictures on different memory cards and then tried to upload these using the same method but I get the same error message.

So I cannot upload any more pictures I take with my camera using bridge.

Please help!

What has happened part way through an upload like any other that has rendered the camera useless in the eyes of bridge?

try a card reader and copy them manually
may also be worth restarting pooter

I haven't got one :(

Does it sound like a camera or a software problem, I can't logically work it out.

if you switch off pooter and camera and start again
if it works it was software
if it doesn't probably hardware!

do you know someone with a pooter to try there?
try not using bridge but just opening the camera file with the windows explorer

a restart of your computer should solve it. if not, then you might have to spend a couple of quid and get a card reader and see if that works...

Just been beaten to it by Tom and Mike

Agree with mike try shutting down (not restart)the computer and then turn on again. Hopefully it will get rid of the error message. turn your camera off and then back on.

If not buy a memory card reader and hopefully this will get your images onto the computer.

Also uninstall your software and then re-install.

If no luck after all this then maybe camera problem but hopefully the error will fix itself with one of the methods mentioned above.

Using a mac so it's not that easy to just open the camera up like when using a pc.

Have actually wiped the mac and re installed everything from the os up!!! Still no joy.

Have installed a program called aperture and this has been able to take all the photos off the camera and view them.
Unfortunately in wiping the mac and starting again Photoshop can no longer open the raw files :(

You probably need to update the raw reader in Photoshop.

Agree with Terry about updating the RAW reader in PS, although not sure what the latest is for CS3. Switching off the computer & unplugging should have worked & I would also have suggested taking the battery out of the camera. Had to do both once or twice on a Laptop, even on my Mac.

Ok guys thanks for your help so far.

I now have the new plug in and the files I uploaded in the program Aperture I can now open in ps. Good times.

However bridge will no longer recognise any of the images on my camera even the 120 or so it originally uploaded. I would like to sort this bridge issue out. Bad times

It now sounds like an issue with adobe camera raw, try an update from adobe, I think the auto updates still work with CS3 :)

This is a funny one.
This is the error message.

'adobe bridge cs3 cannot obtain files from this device.
Please ensure that the device is connected properly or that the battery is charged and try again'

Just a thought as I don't know your camera or Mac. Have you inadverdently changed the USB mode in your set up menu?

Hi, if I had done this how would I have done this as I'm not sure what it means.

Appreciate the help guys

On my cameras in the setup menu there is usually an option for USB. On my GF1 manual which I am just looking at there is an option for PC. This is the one that you select and then the camera is connected via the "USB Mass storage Device" system.

It's something similar in most cameras, I'm not sure how this relates to a Mac though as I never use one.

Unfortunately, the 450D doesn't do USB Mass Storage mode, it only does PTP.

It's specific to the camera, not the computer OS, so it makes no difference whether you're running Windows, Mac, Linux, or anything else.

FWIW, if the 450D did support USB Mass Storage, the card would mount on the desktop like any other hard drive - same as you could in Windows.

TBH, I'd get a card reader anyway. Saves batteries on the camera and simplifies things somewhat in my opinion.

edit: to the OP, what happens when you launch Image Capture in your Applications folder (part of the system software) which should allow you to copy your photos to your hard disk without using Bridge? AFAIK, it's agnostic about the RAW file formats.
