Need help with Flash and addon flash for 550D

Hey guys, ive got a 550D But i see all the pro's using the flash on there cameras, Usually the addon flashes that go on the top.

Im not too sure what settings to use on the onboard flash i have already, Any ideas that could help me out.

As for the addon flash, i may be getting one sonn, is it worth paying the money for one and what ones would you recommend?

You're right that the built in flash is rubbish. An external flash will be expensive and tricky to learn to use. Start reading on the flash forum here and then maybe strobist for loads of information.

The key thing to remember is that straight on flash looks awful and so bouncing or getting the flash away from the camera will produce better results.

Hi,
Yes the on board flash is sometimes a useful backup but will seldom produce the results of a separate flash.
They are certainly worth the money!! Ideally get one that has a ETTL function, this means it talks to the camera and adjusts power to suit. But it is a whole new world and it is worth a] getting a decent flash and b] learning how to use it! There are lots of good books out there but it is a complicated subject so stick with it!
