I think you do need to invest in another lens, a 70-200mm will give sharper pictures and you might consider a convertor as well.

I would but just can't afford it at the moment. Lenses are so expensive

Why not just make it a 70-200mm?

Because they wouldn't be able to sell as many

They do, it just cost a tad more and hence is sharper

if you can't afford a longer lens (and i'd definitely suggest longer rather than a better 200- something like the sigma 150-600 ) you've got to get closer to the subject which for garden birds means a hide or a feeding station or both
