NetGear ReadyNAS Duo RND2110 - possible 2TB redundant?

I have this NetGear ReadyNAS Duo (1x 1TB) RND2110 currently setup as 2x 1TB redundant config.
Would it be able to host 2 x 2TB HDD?

are you running the xRAID mode? if so..

i would still back up the data before faffing with disks though

I used the factory default - hope it is x-Raid, will check later

Now the discs are coming close to full. What is the best practice on data management?

Would you keep both copies on both discs by replacing both at the same time (so no resync needed)? Or you will only keep one copy for archive and reuse one of them in new formation?

In option 2, I can add a 2TB for now, wait until the 1TB is fully used, then swapping in another 2TB...

if you left it as is then it default to xRAID from memory. you can check in the web interface under volume if i remember rightly.

i dont think you have much choice, you replace one at a time and it resyncs. i think the xRAID is the same as normal raid in that even if you have 1x 2TB and 1x 1TB youll only see 1TB until the second disk is replaced with a 2TB then the volume expands.

id be inclined to get an IcyBox 2 drive enclosure such as the IB-RD4320StUS2 and put your 2 old 1TB in it at RAID0 and use it as a 2nd data copy. thats pretty much what i do.

Do you really need 4 copies of the same old data - I know storage is cheap, but does it really worthy?

yeah but raid isnt really 2 copies is it. even mirrored youre still stuffed if you delete a file or it corrupts. or the netgear unit throws its toys and bins both drives.

ok. So let me change the question a little bit. For archive purpose, how many copies would you keep? I am thinking these disc are taken off line and stored in a shoe box in the loft, no?

at least 2 copies of your data at all times, ideally one of those going off site in case of fire/flooding/theft etc.

for example i have my main storage, secondary storage which the main backs up to overnight, then blu-ray media which is burned and then taken to work and put in a drawer.

I can confirm that you can have 2 x 2tb mirrored in this unit, how do I know as its what I have in mine
