Hi folks,

I have a home network set up with several pc's and laptops which connect to the Internet via a router (mixed cable and WiFi) and cable modem.

I've set up permissions for accessing hard drives on the various computers and that's all working okay but I want to prevent one particular application from accessing the Internet - every time it opens it runs off to see if there's an update before opening despite me having unticked that feature. If I deny it access to the network in Windows firewall (Win 7 x64 btw) it opens straight away with no discernable delay.

Does anyone know how to alter the permissions within the firewall to allow access to the network but not the Internet?

Suggestions would be much appreciated :)
 
firewall should stop it going to the net. You can add an entry to your windows host file with the ip address of the ip it's trying to contact that will just direct it to nowhere or you can stop the process starting when you turn on the computer.
 
Depending on the application you may be able to alter the hosts file so that the program will still try and look for an update but will not be able to look outside of the individual machine...

Spends on the purpose as moats reasons for doing this are rather naughty lol.

Ha, yes I thought about that after I'd posted. This is simply to save the 5 seconds, or so, that it takes for the application to check to see if it's the latest version and then tell me there's nothing newer. It's a bit of freeware that I use quite a lot and I've emailed the author about it but until he comes up with a bug fix I'd just like to stop it happening.

I'll try the hosts file thing - dunno why I didn't think of that myself :)

The firewall does stop it going to the net but it also stops it from accessing drives on other networked computers.

I'll try the hosts file :)
 
Thanks folks, adding the IP address to the hosts file worked a treat :)
