I want a new body to compliment my 5DMk2, as I would like it mainly for wildlife and sports the performance will be important to me.

The pros for each seem to be:

7D

Latest technology
1.6x crop (means my 300 f2.8 will give AOV of 480 f2.8)
Smaller, lighter body
AF Microadjust
Higher ISO settings
Uses same batteries as my 5DMk2
Wireless Flash Master

1DMk2n

Fantastic Af performance
Great build quality and weatherproofing

Can anyone suggest anything that may be more relevant to one than the other I may have missed.

No, but its claimed to be as good as the EOS1N and that's good enough for me.

Although the 7D goes higher in ISO, I don't reckon its actually much if any better than the 1D and like for like.

I've gone from 1DII to 7D as I wanted a lighter camera so I'm happy but the 1D is still a great machine

It's an easy choice for me Ed.....

Thanks all, after seeing the crop shot of Cedrics Robin, I have pretty much decided on the 7D, just got to get the money together now!

Wise decision I think Ed. Considering you want the camera for sport and wildlife, you'd find the 1D lacking in reach, and way behind the 5DMK2 you already have.

Would it be an easy choice over the 1D MK3, despite the small difference with the MK2?

It would for me Phil, but that's me being primarily into birds as I know you are. Having had a 1 Series I can honestly say they hold no attraction for me. What I'd really like is a 1.6X crop sensor in a 1 Series body, but the 7D is getting pretty close to being that anyway with massive advantages in reach over anything else out there.

All good points well made!

My primary attractions (well... have to make a wage somehow!) are now sports, so I still the need the tank-like build that only a 1D can give.. and this must remain my priority! I must admit though, I have been tempted by the 7D in the lack of a 1D replacement anytime within the next 12 months! (Which is the current rumour).

I just want to play with all these new toys like video, micro adjusting lenses and so on and so forth... ;)

Sports I don't think is so reach dependant, 300mm is a good length (although 400 ideal for top flight stuff - don't think Ed is doing Prem League just yet :D) plus you have big subjects so have less cropping to do! That's my professional opion on the matter ;) Wildlife is of course, aside the much debate  ... another matter! I can see how the extra MP can make the difference between binning and keeping a shot!

Makes you wonder though... what are the pro wildlife photographers shooting on at the mo? Does anyone know?

Just sticking a 2X TC behind that 300mm 2.8L of yours would give you a 600mm F5.6 ,which on the 7D would give stunning detail. Mind you - you'd have to stop whinging about us long lens guys then. :D

I can see where the wider field view of the 1.3X crop would be an advantage for a lot of sports - no argument there. Also the 1D4 when it comes is obviously going to have a similar AF system to the 7D with all the different mode options and probably more AF points, so worth waiting for I'd say.

 I've got a 2x extender! So far, I've resisted the urge on the whole :p

In fact, last week I was out with my 24-70 and pocket wizards.... shame the kingfisher didn't turn up :(:D

I'm planning on sticking either the 2x or 1.4x (or even both) on my 300 f2.8 Tokina.

I have never shot any birdie shots (other than the odd *****hawk or peacock) so am looking forward to trying my hand at it.

Trust me, it's nicer to be in the same county as the birds you're photographing ;):D

LOL. Believe me the 300mm 2.8L is a stunning performer even with a 2X TC.

I did see some tests when I was looking through reviews... I might give it a go one day... see what all the fuss is about :naughty:

LOL. I'd better not mention the wireless flash capability of the 7D then. :p

Jan shot this on the 50D with the 300mm 2.8L and 2X TC at 800 ISO.

I've got pocket wizards which I'm fairly proficient in the use of, so that really doesn't interest me if I'm honest! For some reason... I really want to play with the video... I'm sure the novelty would soon wear off... but, well, must be one of then guy things

That's a gorgeous shot! Wide open?

Yep wide open and shooting right into the light.

Interestingly, a lot are still shooting with Canon MkIIs. 1DsII is still being used by at least 4 of the top UK wildlife togs who often also have 1DII as well. D3 seems to be popular too with a similar number I know using that.

Bizarrely not sure I know any working wildlife pros using 1DII/1DsIII

My big concern really is with the speed and quality of the AF. Since moving to Canon from Nikon I have always felt the Af has been lacking.

I only had a D200 and the AF on that was muc better than that inherited on the 5D I replaced it with, it was no better on the 30D and doubt that the 5DMk2 is as good as the D200 was.

If I am going to try my hand at some wildlife and sports stuff I think the Af really needs to be an improvement from what I have currently experienced with my Canon cameras. I can't fault the Canon lenses though!

AF is better on the 7D but I'm still learning my way around it. Currently I can't nail shots like I can with my 1DsII but I hope with practice to be able to...

Just a thought... but an extra £300 could get a second hand 1D MK3 if you shopped around! I know there is one on EOS Classifieds at the moment.

The 1D focusses like no ones business with all my 2.8 lenses! The 300 2.8 is pretty much instantaneous!
