I have just bought a D5000.

I have set the options to 12.2mp and NEF&JPEG Fine.

Yet when i open them in Photoshop they are only 14x9 inches big..

why arnt they opening at around 60x40 mark?

That's about what they are on a 'real' camera which will save the images at 250 or 300dpi.
Even on my D3x - 24Mp, full-frame - NEF images open at 16.8" x 25.2" (4032px x 6048px).
On a D3 - 12Mp, full-frame - they open at 11.8" x 17.7" (2832px x 4256px).

Plus by selecting NEF & JPEG, you're saving two versions of the same image to the memory card.
If you're going to open them in Photoshop anyway, there's no real need to shoot both - it's just using up more space on your card: if you need JPEG, shoot JPEG, if you need or want RAW/NEF, shoot that...

i just shoot in both so its easier to view them when im looking thru them on the computer. as the NEF files dont preview.

so if they come out 14x9 could i still strech them to 60x40?

Google Picassa provides thumbnails for NEF files.

Nef files will preview in both file explorer (thumbnails) and picture viewer if you download the appropriate codec for windows

Depends what you need the images for...
There are several ways of interpolating-up in Photoshop - some better than others...
If it's for a poster or something then I've printed out A1 and even A0 prints from the old D1x (6.1mpi) and they were OK.
From the D2x (12mpi) they were great...
I've even had an image from a D2x used on a bill-board.
Up close they'll look a bit ropey, but the viewing distance for prints that large isn't three inches, it's more like 12 feet or more, so they'll still appear as sharp as a smaller print up close.

From a D5000, you should have no difficulty in blowing-up an image to A0 as the in-camera imaging software is way better than the old D2x.

If you're using Photoshop, why not use Bridge to view the images rather than Windows Explorer? Then you can view the JPEG thumbnail embedded in the RAW file itself rather than shooting a seperate JPEG altogether.

If you're just printing up to A3+, then I'd save the images as they are and let the Photoshop/printer software interpolate up as you print. It's probably not the absolute best way of doing it, but it's the easiest and for most applications more than good eenough...

More info about that side of it can be had in the Computers section of this Forum - others here are more knowledgable about printing than I am...

The size is what the print size would be if you printed them at the resolution chosen by Photoshop as its default (presumably 300ppi).
It is only relevant when printing.
Other programs can choose a different default, it is just a number to fill the box.
You can put any number you like in the resolution box and save the file - it will still have the same number of pixels - it is the same file.
It means nothing until you want to print.

You can print photos at any size, your software will enlarge it if necessary.

Although 60 x 40 is very big, 12 MP should be enough for a decent print.

Did you bother to read any of what I said or shall I just give up?

sorry mate i did read what you said i just didnt finish what i was typing lol.

i mean to say " will it print 60x40 but still be clear?" i know you say it will be clear if you stand back.. but if i wanted a image for example to be on a print above my bed for example i wouldnt want it to be all pixelated etc.

Yes it will...to get a massive breakdown in image quality, you'd have to print up to 60'x40' not 60"x40"...
Like I said an A0 poster (33.1 × 46.8 inches) was easily achievable with the older D1x camera, so with yours, 60" x 40" would be ok...
