This was launched a few days ago following conversations between photographers, football clubs and associations over the last year, and particularly since top-level football in the UK returned in June after the Covid-19 enforced break.

The FPA has just two classes of membership. (1) Professional membership, which is open to full-time professional sport photographers specialising in football; and (2) for those who do not meet those conditions, there is also Associate Membership, open to students studying photography, or a related course, and those who demonstrate a real, genuine and committed interest in becoming a professional football photographer (my italics).

I've not spoke to anyone involved in this venture but I wonder what regular football photographers on here make of this and what it means for the future. I'm not sure that the membership classes are well-defined, personally, but I think I can see what the intention is and have my own thoughts about where this might be heading.

I have never felt the need to join any organisation... I had a look at the above link and there doesnt seem to be any info on how to join or how much..

Yeah didn’t take anything positive from the website really. Very brief, I’d like to know how this adds to the profession as we all know what a tough job it is

In some ways these bodies can do good, especially when lobbying as a collective group rather than a series of individuals - but the crunch depends on how much of a stance they are prepared to make - if one member is slighted in some way, does everyone react in the same way or not. All for one and one for all?

Several months down the line on this one and wondering how regular footy guys feel about this venture? Numbers allowed at EPL remain very tight and its clear that several clubs are not operating rotas that would guarantee even occasional access to small agencies.

There are various Twitter posts of late from those who are very much against the FPA but it might be useful to hear from any FPA members on where they stand.

I looked into it but didnt join as I really cant see any advantage other than willy waving...

Yes, I think this has been around for a month or two. Interesting that the founders of neither organisation have gone out of their way to identify themselves yet (although I have some idea as to who is behind the FPA). It will be interesting to see how things pan out when the new season starts in August and when normality will hopefully be restored.
