Hi all.

I just bought a new hard drive, popped it in the PC and it's nowhere to be seen.
I swear last time I installed a drive it was 'plug and play' :shrug:

HEEELLLPPP!!!!!!!!
 
If you go into setup after booting the machine, does the Bios see the drive?

I had this when I built my PC a while back.
You need to go to into Drive management and "authorise them" or whatever thier technical term is. Then format, and then it should be good to go.

Initialise it, but you'd expect most drives to come pre formatted. But as said it might just need a drive letter.

It would be nice for the op to say what the resolution was so anyone searching across this thread doesn't have a wasted click :)
 
I format and partiton as a matter of course, but I cant recall if they actually needed formatting.
 
I had every intention of updating the thread just as soon as I got a chance to :)

I went into computer management > storage > disk management > gave it a drive letter, activated/initialised the drive, format then job done.

But I was surprised that I had to do all this. I really don't remember doing it last time I bought a hard drive.

But then back in the old days, I remember having to use FDisk in DOS to partition, format etc.....

Anyway, £42 for a Western Digital 1tb, 64mb cache, 7200RPM, 300mb/s drive :eek:
Crazy prices........

Been that way for every SATA drive I have installed for a good few years now, whilst the good old IDE ones were visible right away.
