Maybe im late with this but for some reason itunes just sent me the update.
 
It's probably the 4.01 update. Yes it is huge, updated mine last week but didn't notice any real difference.

Apart for some other updates, it includes a new algorithm to calculate signal strength. Apparently Apple were using using the wrong one (?). Still get signal drop with the "Death Grip" but I'm waiting for my "Free" case from Steve Jobs
 
yep updating my 3g now - main update is about the display bars on signal strength, not a worry for us 3G'ers :D
 
Mine was last week also, it did nothing for the issue mentioned either.
 
I thought the 4.0.1 update re calibrated the signal bars?
 
Before my update, I had one bar (o2), I did the update, iphone in the same place, one bar...
 
Well I've done the update and can't see any difference yet.
 
Is this 4.0.1? I updated to that last week and ended up getting the phone swapped by Apple as it just screwed it up so avoiding it at the mo.

Really pee'd off that I can't get back to 3.1.3 though.
