New Laptop = Big Trouble. Help needed please!

I've got an HP Pavillion dv9000 running Vista (hate it), and it has started to play silly beggars (I'm being polite!), it keeps locking up completely. I get error messages such as "HP Health Check Scheduler has stopped working" and other things about system health that have stopped working. It's gonna go across the room soon. It's taken me ages just to log on and type this thread.
I'm guessing I'm probably virused up?
I'm guessing it needs a system restore to factory settings?
I'm hoping I'm wrong?

Anyone come across anything similar and found how to fix it?

I've tried installing SP1 but it won't have it, even with direct help from Microsoft who say I need original Vista disks which I don't have.

Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Virus = unlikely unless you've been visiting naughty sites or opening emails from strangers.

Back to factory settings might do the trick as long as it's not a hardware fault, back up your important stuff first if you can.
 
Do you have the original installation discs? Is there anything on the laptop that you have not got a backup of?

Good idea Steep, luckily I've got a portable hard drive so I'll back up to that and then do it. It's driving me round the bend. It'll be fine for about a minute then lock up for three.

It's one of those stupid ones that didn't come with discs - thanks Hewlett Packard, that was a good idea. I'll run a backup over the weekend and run a restore. (Luckily no photoshop or anything on new machine yet as you can't install without SP1 and without discs I can't install SP1). Cheers Cowasaki.
 
Bad luck I think.
It may be that there are some software conflicts causing the problems, before you start restoring etc, try this piece of free software, I use it all the time. CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Download and run this for Rigistery first it will scan from issues and then run the cleaner, as I say i use it all the time and most times before i shut down., you never know what you pick up surfing.

Thanks Medway, I'll give it a go. It's more likely to work than throwing my laptop on the floor and stamping on it, which is the direction I'm heading in at the moment...!
 
hi pippy, i think i have a vista home premium disk at home if that helps:shrug:
 
yeah, no probs, it is a couple of years old, but should work

as long as i get it back though;)

Yes, there is, don't know much about it though. When I did the restart/press f11 thing last night to get the dialogue up the oldest restore it offered me was Monday and this problem first started last weekend so I didn't bother.

The Pavillion series came with a partition on which there is a utility to create a set of install discs. If that is still there you should be able to do that now before you wipe it.

If you can create that then you should be able to restore from there.
 
might be worth reinstalling vista. i guess it would fix the problem

As its alive says, there should be a utility to make the disks, you will need several blank CD's or DVD's though. Without them it wont work. And i have no idea why you would need a Vista install disk to install SP1 thats complete rubbish, no idea what microsoft are talking about ?

Can you hear a fan running while its switched on ? If it wasnt so new id say it was overheating !
 
There is a restore partition on the hard drive on a HP. DO not put another vista disk anywhere near your machine, or you will wipe the partition and be missing all the specific drivers for you laptop

Who sold you the laptop?

As a footnote, creating the recovery disks usually wipes the partition

Off the top of my head, if you havent allready made recovery disks, you can restore the machine by tapping F8 on boot, and choose the "recover my computer" from the menu presented

The problem you are experiencing is the dippy HP software, which is so interfeering it probably wants to micro manage the fan when you decide to have a pee. You may resolve the issue by stripping the offending items from the system start up list (type MSCONFIG in the seach box). the aformentioned dippy software usually falls over when HP updates it: In english: it refers to files that it assumes will be XY & Z in content, but in reality MS or Macafee or Norton, or Apple have updated those files. HP are not smart enough to realise thier precious updates are going onto an organic system

Well I just completed the restore/rebuild, and bloody hell what a difference. I hadn't realised how slow the interweb was on it before. I'll keep an eye on it to see if the HP thingy mucks it all up again but just glad I got it working.
