New laptop on a tight budget

I need a new laptop as the hinges on my Compaq are starting to go. I generally only use it for web browsing and photography. Is it worth spending the extra on a 17" screen or does it not make that much difference? I have a budget of £500 absolute max but preferably under £400. Which would you all recommend? Is there any difference between quality of screen these days?
