New laptop - which one?

Hi folks,

I'm going out to buy a new laptop tomorrow and have narrowed my shortlist down to TWO. The intention is to replace my ageing desktop PC so useage will be general computing (MS Office/emails/web browsing) and photo editing (CS5Extended/Elements 8/Capture NX2). The budget is firmly set at £500.

Both candidates have 17.3" (1600x900) screens, 3GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB HDD and W7 Home Premium. They are :-

a) ACER AS 7551 ~ P320 processor running at 2GHz/1MB cache
b) HP G72-A20 ~ P6000 processor running at 1.86GHz/3MB cache

In the opinion of the jury, which one would be the better buy? Would it make any difference if I were to plan to install 64bit W7 Ultimate? Would I gain anything by doing that?

Your opinions would be appreciated.

I've had consistently good results from Acer laptops and found them to be very reliable.

Friend bought an HP top of the range a couple of months ago. It's been back to HP already to be mended. Get the acer!

I have just purchased the Acer 5742 i3-370M processor from CURRYS. Its a cracker
Got £70 trade in for my old laptop.

Probably better to replace it with a more up to date desktop & screen unless you specifically want to edit photos when away from home. With a laptop you are always compromising quality for portability.

If you have any Tesco clubcard vouchers you can double their value at the moment (until Dec 5th) for use on computers. The range isn't that great but they have some decent looking machines.

Adrian,

I know what you mean about the compromise but I find myself away from home more and more recently and editing picures is preferable (for my wasteline and wallet) to propping up some hotel bar.

The plan is to retain the monitor/keyboard/mouse from the desktop system for use when I'm home, pass the base unit onto SWMBO and then convert her base unit into a file/web server. Well, that's the plan anyway :)

Just a final post to bring closure to this thread. I bought an HP G72-102sa from Comet yesterday - i3 processor/250GB HDD/2GB DDR3 RAM/17" screen/Win7 64bit - and have spent all of today getting it set up the way I want it.

So far, so good :-)

Shelf price was £399.99 ... 10% discount applied at the checkout so £360 spent ... happy day :-)

Thanks to all that provided advice, it was much appreciated as always.

Seriously guys,, If you are going to be doing editing on the laptop, you need to be able to do a decent screen calibration job on it. I therefore recommend that you ensure that you can fully adjust the brightness and contrast on which ever machine you choose.
