New lens, am I doing something wrong

I have an Oly E500 and have bought myself a 50mm OM lens and the adapter to suit. I took some test shots all excited like, but when looking at them on the computer, the area of focus is down and left of the object I was focusing on, although I was actually focusing in the middle of the frame.

Is there a possible problem with the lens or is it the camera fighting against it? Or, is it just a case of keep practicing and I'll figure it out?

Have a fiddle with the diopter dial just to the left of your viewfinder - chances are you have caught that. I don't know your camera but there should be a section in the manual on how to get this correct.

I've spent the last hour playing with different settings and I think I've sussed it...

Picture quality is so much better than with my 17-45 kit lens, but the manual focus is going to take some mastering! :)

I got a 50mm for my D40 and was really depressesd about shots being out of focus until I did a bit of reading up about it - the thing to get your head around is the really narrow DOF, it's literally mm's when it's wide open

Don't know about the Canon but the Nikon has a green dot indicator when you have your point in focus, assume Canon has something similar

I have a 50mm f1.4 and it's a jem of a lens! Do you have live view on your Oly E500? If you have then zoom in and then focus, this will ensure your focussing is spot on. Also if you have say a f1.4 lens then stop down a bit to make sure more of the subject (like that candle--nice shot by the way!) is in focus.

Manual focus lenses are cheap and great fun but you do have to work at it a little.
