Hi all i got my sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens today (Used Model) but im not very happy with it and dont know if im being to pickie.

The lens came and the hood is scrapped at the front, there is some of the coating missing on parts of the lens there is also marks here and there and very dirty and used looking.

I payed £410 for the lens and feel it may be to much for something that looks very used.
£16 postage.

That is quite a lot for this lens.
Is it the MKII version?

And where did it come from?

Hi have you any photos? If bought from a dealer you will have a certain amount of protection, and should be able to return the goods if they are not as advertised....

If your not happy then contact the seller, have you got a link to the auction then we can have a look and give a better opinion?

The add said great condition bought last year, thats about it other than items included.

contact ebay as well then if you get no joy with the seller

Price is OK if its in good condition.

From what you say it sounds like its mis-described.

Depends how bad this missing coating and scratch is?

My 100-300 F4 has missing coating and a mark on the hood, yet i would describe it as good condition. Sigmas always loose coating, it cant be avoided.

I have just heard back and said i can return it but i dont know if im being to pickie.

See if you like shots. If you do, don't worry about the coating.

Aim the lens wide open at f/2.8 200mm at a chimney pot at around 60 meters. If its sharp, keep the lens. A bad sample will be soft, with a hazy veil over the image.

not sure about posting the auction up incase it is somebody on here dont want to start a fight where there is not one.

were there any pics on the auction itself? post them up instead or pics of the lens as it is now.

Good condition in photographic equipment terms is usually not very good in reality!

They tend to follow a scale as follows: from good to bad

nr mint or mint
mint-
exc++
exc+
exc
very good
good
average
poor
bad

So on a scale of 1 to 10 good condition rates at about a 4 on some scales poor and bad are left out and good is only 2nd worst to average.

Were there no photographs of the lens showing its condition?

Stick some photos of the lens up so we can see what you are on about....

I can do this later no probs, As i said the hood looks bad part.

The seller has said he would give me the price of the hood back to secure the deal anybody know what these might cost.

Can anybody tell me how to tell if it's a sharp model, tell me what i need to(mind it's dark out now) and i will post the shot here for your opinion as i would maybe not be able to tell.

There is an Ebay seller - pheobe-g maybe? that does replacement hoods for a good price.

Stupid question time, that none of you have commented on so far is, does it take a good image, it the lens is optically sound, why worry, ok, probably pay abit too much for the lens or then again £650 new, 30% off new price for 2nd hand value £450, so about right and sigma paint work is renowned for chipping, flaking off. If the lens is optically sound, keep it, if they is a problem there as well, then send it back.

Hmm, might have paid a little over the odds as I got mine for £400 posted, and you couldn't tell it from new. There are 3 different models of this lens though as far as I'm aware, so depending on what model it is could make the difference.

As said, if it was described as new, then you have grounds for complaining, but it depends how much hassl;e you're willing to go through really.

Chris

Ok somebody give me a good example to test this on then, you's keep asking how good the optics are but since it's pitch black outside how can i test.

And it was buy it now, no bidding done from me.
