I've been toying with the idea of getting an upgrade to the D7000 and/or new lenses for quite some time. With only a small budget of roughly £500 I've decided that I'll start with a new lens then add if I have some spare cash.
My situation is this: I like taking landscapes but only have the opportunity once every week or fortnight (or during holiday). I have a little one on the way (less than 3 weeks!) so I can imagine that I will have even less time for landscapes. I want to take some great shots of my newborn that I can be proud of. I currently have a Nikon D3100 with the kit 18-55mm, 55-300mm and 35mm f1.8 along with a Yonguno 560 and Rf-603 triggers.
My lens options are:
1. Ultra-wide angle Sigma 10-20
2. Wide angle Sigma 17-50 2.8
3. Mid-range zoom Sigma 28-70 2.8
My first option is deciding what type of lens do I want?
- An ultra-wide would be great - this would complete the ultra-wide angle of focal lengths to supplement my kit lens. However, I'm worried that I wouldn't use it often enough.
- A kit lens upgrade might be sensible. I would like to have the low-light ability at the 50mm range instead of the aperture reaching f5.6 on the kit. However, the kit lens is good and wondering is it worth paying around £500 to gain two stops of light with the f2.8?
- A mid-range zoom might be a worthwhile purchase to taking portraiture and candid shots. However, is it necessary since I have all the focal lengths covered?
Just wanting some advice from fellow photographers as it's quite a big decision to make for me - the lens itself is going to be worth about the same as my whole kit combined!
