New lens problem ?

I have just got a new Nikkor 50mm f1/8D and can't get it to take a picture when set at 1.8. It show FE E where the aperture setting should be on my D50.

Is this a fault ?
 
Cheers Tom. Thought I had broken it unpacking it.
