hi all

looking for some pointers hopfully

going for a new walk around for my 40d

the two i have been looking at are EF 24-105L or the new EF S 15-85
i cannot see me ever going FF, have read about both and the 15-85 is 24-135 on my 40d
the glass construction looks nearly the same and the price sould indicate a better lens

anyone any views please

hi

i want it as ageneral walk about

£600-700

i know the 24-105 is an l lens but the 15 - 85 give 24-135 on my 40d
and lens optics are a close match

As I mentioned, you also need to multiply the 24-105 lens by 1.6 when used on your 40d, not just the 15-85.

I am thinking of upgrading to the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM Lens. Which would be at the top or just above your budget. But do not have personal experience, so would be interested in others opinion.

The 17-55mm f2.8 is a great lens, and highly recommended as a walkaround lens. The 24-105mm f4 is also a great lens, but as mentioned, really intended for a FF camera because of the crop factor of your 40D not getting the benefits of 24mm. The 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 is I think canon's replacement of the 17-85mm which was abit of a disappointment performance wise, there are 1 or 2 reviews of this lens, but its still relatively new.

Depends if you want wide angle or not with a walkabout lens. Personally I would go for the 17-55mm, the 24-105mm on my 20D just doesn't sit right, and thats why it stays on the 1D instead, only 1.3x crop so still have wide angle capabilities.

The 24-105 is utterly stunning.
Built like a brick, sharp as hell, fast and silent AF. The list goes on.
Not very wide at the 'wide' end, but if that's not an issue go for it.

I was very wary about getting one, but so glad I did :woot:

F4 isn't that fast, but if that's not an issue, I highly recommend it.

As has been said you need to multiply your crop factor for EF lenses not just EF-S lenses.

With that in mind you're looking at:

The EF lens (24-105) will equate to 38-168
The EF-S lens (15-85) will equate to 24-135

I would find the 24-105 a bit long at the short end as I would miss the wider angle of the 15-85 for landscapes.

That said the 24-105 is L glass and not just for crop sensors - both good points if selling on later.

I recently upgraded from the 40D 17-85 kit lens to the 24-105L.

It is a fantastic lens very sharp and crisp even at f4. I would not hesitate to reccommend it plus you have the build quality of an L lens as an added bonus!!

I checked my previous photos to see if 24 would be a problem as the widest angle on my walkround and found most pics I take are 24+ anyway!! I do have a Sigma 10-20 for uwa use if required.

Hope this is of some help.

hi all

thanks for the comments

the 24-105 is great but as you point out 38 on a crop body

thats why i was looking at the 15-85 i think 24-135 is a good walk around
and look at the spec looks close to the 24-105 maybe the 15-85 is an EF S L lens ???
i have the 55-250 which is also good but the next buy after new walk around is a 100-400

well dont know will have to go to chester to LCE tryone on my 40d

thanks all

IMO you need to identify what you perceive to be shortcomings with your 24-70 f2.8 before choosing the next lens.

I have the 24-105mm L and it's a stonkin lens....it's hardly off my 40D, stunningly sharp and just a superb lens
