I was thinking about getting a new monitor sometime soon and saw the HP 2310 and the hp 2510i in PC world and they did look very nice and clean.

Currently Samsung syncmaster 2032BW 20" and a Dell E248WFP

I'd possible get rid of the samsung and use the new monitor as the main one dependant on its size and quality.

I cant for the life of me remember the special quality that a monitor should have for photo editing, so maybe someone can help, my budget isnt all that huge though so I might have to get a decent sub pro monitor maybe around £250 or so
 
How about a Dell 2209WA? Had mine for about a month and am simply loving it.
Ok, it's a reconditioned one from ebay, but it is like new condition and only cost £159.00 inclusive of next day delivery. I believe that others on this forum have also bought one from the same seller without any problems.

Oh, and the special quality that you refer to is the panel type - IPS. The 2209WA has such a panel.
 
The thing you are looking for in monitors is the screen type. Most cheap monitors have a TN panel which is a 6 bit screen. The better panels are PVA or IPS (H-IPS, S-IPS). These are 8 bit panels which can display more colours.

The easy way to tell which kind of panel is in the monitor is to look at the specs. If it says viewing angles are something like 170/170 (or 170/160) then it is a TN panel. If it says it is 178/178 or greater, then it is a PVA/IPS panel. The Dell monitor the previous poster linked to is a IPS panel (which is good).

I just got one last week. Brand new condition and a great seller. 1st one that arrived has a few dead pixels and they immediately shipped another which arrived next day and the duff one was collected. Can't fault the service, price or quality. Paying PC World prices would be foolish.

The dell ones dont have the shiny screens do they?

Trying to find specs on the Dell 248WFP that I have and see if thats a decent screen or not.

Found it, im really looking for something around the 24" mark as I would want to use the new one as the main monitor. Is there a next step above that dell and is it glossy?

Dell UltraSharp U2410 if you want 24 inch with IPS screen and not glossy (wide colour gamut too and lots of connection options).

HP ZR24w if you want 24 inch IPS but at the lower price. Colour gamut is not quite as good, and not as many connection options, but it is around £100 cheaper.

The other option if you buy used is Dell 2408 WFP. This is a PVA screen though not IPS (still 8 bit colour, but not quite as good for gaming).

I was just looking at the Dell Ultrasharp U2311H which is only 23" but a lot cheaper.

Im guessing that the "apple" glossy black screen is not something decent PC monitors have.
 
The Dell U2311H seems quite good, and if you read this review you will see that it is actually quite good.

The two things that made it not acceptable for me was that it has limited connection options, and no VESA mount (this is the big one, as I have my monitors on VESA desk mounts). But if you are not worried about these two then it seems to be a good choice.

Also if you want that deep black, you want a monitor with LED backlighting, which is available on the U2410.

Edit: It seems some people are saying that the U2311H does have a VESA mount.....
