I am thinking of upgrading my PC, I am currently using a pretty old HP Pavillion Pentium 4.

I like the box (it is an ATX form factor), so I am planning on re-using it and filling it with the following bits:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Socket 775 (3.0GHz) 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H GeForce 7100 Socket 775 onboard VGA 8 channel audio mATX Motherboard

Corsair 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Kit CL5 1.9V

Coolermaster 460W eXtreme Power Plus PSU - 20+4pin 4+4 ATX12v 4x SATA 6pin PCI-E

Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM

Plus Vista premium OEM.

I can get the lot for £405 from e-buyer. An equivalent spec from a shop will be £700.

Can anyone see any issues with the spec??
 
A quad might be nice for photoshop and you'll not be able to overclock on that board but if your not worried that's a solid built. Just get the 64bit version of vista.
 
I would go for faster RAM if I were you, 8500+

I'm not too sure on the HDD, but I would get a Samsung Spinpoint F1.

Don't undervalue the Q6600 either, that is a brilliant CPU with great overclocking potential, I have mine running on 3.2Ghz. Either that, or go for one of the newer, faster quad cores.

And from previous experience, I would avoid Gigabyte.
 
The only thing that springs out to me is the HDD I would go for a larger one as I recently upgraded to a 1TB and using RAW is supprisingly easy to fill 500gb
 
Download the windows7 64bit release candidate which will work for a good few months, save the price of buying vista now and upgrading to 7 later. 7 is a much better o/s than vista already.

Asus are good, also you don't mention what video card you will be using.
 
what about a graphics card ?

also the power supply seems a bit low, especially if you add a graphics card.
 
It looks like on board graphics which is fair enough unless you are gaming, and makes the PSU fine without a gfx card.

And I dont know what you guys have against Gigabyte, imo they are the best and Asus are teh suck......and my mate's Asus mobo blew up a couple of months ago just to back up my feelings (my gigabyte one is 2.5years old and still fine).
 
No problems with Gigayte or Asus mobos over a good few years of building.
 
Had two Gigabyte mobos, the sata controllers on both failed within after a few months of use. Never again.
Asus on the other hand have always performed well for me.
 
Just my two pence....

Asus and Abit mobo's I have used have all been quality. Abit are a bit more ££ though. Cant say about any other makes.

I would agree on getting a 1TB drive, for the sake of about 20 quid or so it'll save you pulling your hair out in a year! ;)

Not sure if your thinking about overclocking, but I would consider swapping the case for something newer with better airflow. OEM cases are pretty useless for any serious overclocking. If you do keep the old case, just check the fans are ok. Dont want all that nice new gear going pop!

Thnks for the advice .. Successfully installed the new bits into the old box with room to spare as the new MoBo is a bit smaller than the previous 5 year old tech.

My only isues were:
Hardware -the wiring for the front pannel audio connectors on my old case is not labled, and I had pulled all the wires off my old MoBo without labelling them up .. duhh. Left them off for the moment I will attempt to test the continuity later.

Software - Vista loaded up sweetly once, then got hung somehow and would not re-boot. Had to re-load again. Working fine now. The loading screens for Vista had too many long pauses with no information, OK if you have seen it before but maks you think nothing is happening.

Most of my old software has successfully loaded onto Vista and sprints along .. except MS Money 2000, loaded OK but I can not open the backup Money file .. asks for a password, I am sure I never used one before.

What audio connectors did you have, and what colour are the cables ?

also the money 2000 problem is due to the fact that since your money 2000 was installed on the old computer, it will have received quite a fe updates from MS, probably making it money 2002 or something like that. you are now trying to open it in an unupdated money 2000 version, and it doesnt like that.

If you were to upgrade a newer version will be able to open it.
