New royal mail stamps

Probably just nicked them from flickr:D

A project I spent a year on has just come to fruition with the release of these Royal Mail stamps, the first A-L set of an aphabetical tour of Britain. I shared the job with Charlie Waite and in the first set Harlech Castle, Ironbridge, Edinburgh Castle, Glastonbury Tor, Carrick a Rede and 10 Downing Street are my images. It was a great job to work on. There's a shot of David Cameron holding my pic of his door in yesterday's Telegraph that I've just come across. Pity that Royal Mail haven't mentioned the photographers. D

Good old BBC!

"Glastonbury Tor, in Somerset, is managed by the National Trust. The Tor sits in the middle of a plain called the Summerland Meadows."

Um,no. It's the Somerset Levels. You just can't get the staff...

Er, the people of Glastonbury and its environs seem to think it's called Summerland Meadows

Scientists from the aeronautics department of the Mystical University of Glastonbury announced today that a human is unlikely to be launched into space next year on the maiden voyage of the new Astral class rocket. The rocket will launch from the Summerland Meadows in full view of an audience on Glastonbury Tor.

Instead of a human payload, Jeremy, a pig-tailed macaque trained since birth to step in as backup will head the space flight – the opportunity of a lifetime for this proud monkey. Monkeys are very popular on space flights because they respond well in an emergency, and with just a little adjustment can wear clothing that has been designed for humans.

:)

I suspect the staff can keep their jobs ;)

That is pretty impressive

Not so sure...

Note the similarity in wording on those quotes. (And one of the cited places is leading with monkey-to-head-glastonbury-space-project-team-in-2012).

I can't find any reference to `Summerland Meadows` on the OS 1:25 000 (sheet 141), even though the fields and farms surrounding the Tor are named.

I've never heard the name before today. And I can see the Tor from my house. Bit of an odd one if you ask me. Probably aliens up to their tricks again. It's usually aliens around here, the little rascals. :p

I've forwarded this to the ace reporters of the Central Somerset Gazette - I expect they will report back in less than a few years.

I figured the space-monkey story was considerably less than serious (as is the rest of the site) :D

Well, the phrase certainly turns up on Wikipedia's entry on the Tor

So that probably accounts for 95% of the similar phraseology. Possibly even the BBC.

Whether someone's been messing about with Wikipedia and it's taken on a life of its own is another question. These things do happen.

That'd be my guess. Someone cocked up the original entry perhaps, and now it's taken as definitive because no-one since has bothered to check. I've asked a few people around here, and not a single person has heard that name.
